Odette (odman) | 30 comments I am looking for recommendations for Sci Fi/Fantasy written by indigenous authors.

Sarah | 3187 comments These are less recommendations and more pointers in where to look. I believe they are all indigenous to North America:
Stephen Graham Jones - writes horror (which I know some consider as a subgenre of fantasy) - really love him.

Rebecca Roanhorse - she has a SF short story out there that's awesome (Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience) but her novels are more fantasy.

Louise Erdrich - She writes on the more literary side of things, Future Home of the Living God is a SF leaning dystopian. It was not my favorite book, but I know some appreciated it more than I did.

Sherman Alexie
Leslie Marmon Silko
Waubgeshig Rice
Cherie Dimaline
Daniel H. Wilson

Love: Beyond Body, Space & Time - an anthology

I'd also love to see recommendations from other group members for authors that are indigenous to other continents/countries. Unfortunately it's something I'm still working on reading more of myself.

Melani | 146 comments Fools Crow by James Welch kind of borders the magical realism line. I don't know that it's out and it fantasy, but it's really good.

Monkey Beach by Eden Robinson is one that's on my TBR, so I can't say how good it is.

The Antelope Wife by Louise Erdrich definitely falls into fantasy though. She's already been mentioned, but I thought I'd bring it up.

Did we read Moon of the Crusted Snow in this book group? I can't remember if it was this one or another goodreads book group. See also The Marrow Thieves, I'm not sure which book group I read it in, but it is a post apocalyptic story so it fits.

How I Became a Ghost by Tim Tingle is definitely for younger readers, but still worth mentioning.

Just doing a few quick google searches turned up a few more books to add to my TBR.

Celia's Song
Red Spider White Web
Tantalize

Odette (odman) | 30 comments Thanks for the good suggestions so far.
I can add another Australian author:
Terra Nullius and The Old Lie both by Claire G. Coleman.
Are there any suggestions for indigenous populations of northern europe/asia, such as the Sami.
Also any in addition to Rebecca Roanhorse for South America.

I tried to look for Sami speculative fiction a couple of years ago, desperately, but couldn't find anything :/

Kaa | 1548 comments If I recall correctly, Why Indigenous Literatures Matter (in addition to being an excellent book) has some good SFF recs. The author also wrote The Way of Thorn and Thunder.

Máret Ánne Sara writes Sami fantasy (Middle-Grade, I believe), one of her book has even been translated into English: In Between Worlds. But she's the only one I know of.

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Thanks Eva! I don't remember if I found that one when I was looking for Sámi books, but I certainly can't find it anywhere in any non-Sámi language :/ I'll add it to my TBR anyway, maybe someday it'll be translated into Finnish, and then my library will have it.

message 10: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (beniowa79) | 383 comments Walking the Clouds: An Anthology of Indigenous Science Fiction is anthology that is kind of sampler of many different indigenous authors, some of whom have already been mentioned here but also several others.

Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger is a YA/fantasy/mystery. It was a new release last year and is up for the Lodestar Award.

Another one that hasn't been mentioned yet is Zadayi Red by Caleb Fox, a fantasy based on Native American myths.
