Ivy opened the door and brushed her hair over to one shoulder. It was dark, as per usual, and unruly (unfortunately for her, also a standard), and contrasted against her pale skin. She glanced down at her hands as they walked, and for the briefest of seconds, a spark faintly lit up between her fingers. Ivy blinked, and turned her hand over. Bluish-whitish sparks, like miniature lightning, danced across her palms, leaving behind a tingly warmth.

She quickly looked up at Soren but he seemed to be preoccupied with his own deal, so she balled her hands up in fists. The sparks immediately stopped and she almost wept in relief. This had been happening to her for the past month or so, but she had never caught it in the act, so to speak.

Soren spoke, a brief, curt no, and she swallowed. Was this only happening to her? Ivy had been browsing online the night prior and clicked through a few pages and links, eventually coming to a page entirely in Arabic. She read it with ease. Another oddball event was a week before that, at the dinner table, when she replied -- in Sanskrit, the deadest of the dead languages -- to a question asked by her parents. Just by looking at objects she could feel herself fill up with info, every fault or merit embedding itself in her head.

Ivy scoffed at his comment about her intelligence. "Don't be an arse," she said, shoving him jokingly. "And no, I didn't. I've never read anything in Thai in my life, save for that book."

She lowered her voice and stopped. "Look at this, Ren." Ivy held out her hands, which were visibly shaking, and held her breath as blue sparks ran the length of her arms and fingers. "I'm not the only one that sees this, right? Right?" She glanced around warily, but no one else seemed to be on their side of the street. "Ren. Say something. Please. Anything."

Soren glanced at her fingers once, then looked away, thinking that Ivy was just overreacting over something again. Everyone seemed to overreact compared to Soren. After blinking, his eyes darted to Ivy's fingers again. His dark eyes furtively glancing about the dim-lighted cafe, Soren instinctively reached out his hands to cover Ivy's. He made sure not to come too close, though; he didn't know how strong it was, that strange blue electricity.

"I can see it, too," he murmured, as he guided them both to a table tucked into a corner towards the back of the cafe, beige shades covering the windows. Through them, sleepy sun rays filtered through curiously, as if wondering what was going on with Ivy and Soren.

He turned his head slightly to look at the other patrons. When the part-timer turned her back and the last patron went to sit down, Soren quickly disappeared. His skin was gone, his clothes were gone. There was simply nothing where he sat. He uttered, leaning closer to Ivy over the table across from her, "I'm still here. Trust me, you're not alone."

Ivy was impulsive for that small moment, not even thinking about the problems she could've caused; briefly, she thought about whether or not she could cause an electrical fire. Her heart was pounding, which didn't help the electricity, and a conflicting sense of relief and dread filled her to the brim.

"I can see it, too," echoed in her ears and Ivy swallowed, her throat constricting and becoming unreasonably dry. Soren's hands covered hers and even though she tried to minimize the sparks, she could feel shocks passing between them, and she didn't know if she should apologize or say thank you, or--

And then he was gone.

His hands vanished and she was looking at herself, at her chipped green nail polish and at the small scar on her index finger from when she was nine, and then a voice, an "I'm still here." Ivy's eyes met the spot where Soren would be, if she was able to see him. Soren had shocked her into a stunned silence as she glanced around. Ivy could still feel him, but he was completely.. gone. Just gone.

(( So, how did these two first meet? ^^’’ ))

Soren swallowed, fearful of what could go wrong. He always thought that he trusted Ivy too much — especially since when they’d first met, his first instinct was to run. He looked around carefully, waiting for the line at the counter near their table to die down. As the last person again walked away with a frappucino, he leaned into the inner side of the booth seat and willed himself to appear again.

He’d played a risky game this time. When the power had first manifested within him, he had taken an hour straight to try to make himself visible again. It had felt like days. He hadn’t used this power again till now, having been too tentative. He had panicked the first time it hadn’t worked, and he’d been deeply afraid of trying it again. But Soren wasn’t so cowardly as to never try it again.

“I can do more,” he murmured, but he immediately shook his head in case she asked if he could demonstrate. He felt too afraid of trying anything more in public. “So you’re…” — he gestured vaguely in the air with his long fingers — “…you’re not alone. I guess.” He fingered the wire of the earphones looped around his neck, and he finally looked away, observing the other patrons inside Costa Coffee.

((Hm. I dunno. Maybe school?))

Ivy watched in shock, many thoughts running through her head, as Soren reappeared before her eyes. His familiar features became visible, slowly and cautiously, and Ivy pulled her hands back. "More?" the girl murmured, eyes widening. "And you could say that, I guess.." Ivy trailed off, running her hands through her hair, worrying it, toying with the ends.

She sat there in thought for a few moments, thinking about the situation at hand. "That's how I can read Thai," she said slowly, figuring it out. "Right?"

(Sorry for being irresponsible. I wrote on the status thread that I am on a semi-hiatus.)

Soren nodded some, his forehead creased in thought. “Yeah, I think so,” he confirmed, putting his hand out on the table. When he grasped empty air, he looked away from Ivy for a moment and noticed that there was no black coffee to drink from. He started to drum his right five fingers on the table, anxious for something. He felt the same creeping goosebumps running up his back that he had so many years ago when the two had met in middle school. He had felt apprehensive… fearful.

Lacing his fingers together and resting his chin upon them, he asked with a playful smirk tugging up one side of his lips, “Could you get me a black coffee, please, Miss Ivy?” He didn’t want to talk about it anymore, especially in public. Playing with his invisibility made him feel sick. It had been so close. He could’ve made some kind of mistake, or Ivy could have freaked out, or some patron could have seen.

Ivy could feel the charge wanting to build up again, and her already-frizzy hair began to stick to the small booth they were in. She quickly gathered it together and brought it over to one side, leg bouncing. Sooner or later a tic would flare up, she knew it, so Vie attempted to calm down, breathing in and out slowly. From across the table Soren looked just as shaken up, if not more, than she was.

His voice made her snap back, meeting his concerned -- or nervous?, Ivy thought -- eyes. Ivy nodded quickly, happy for a reprieve. "Just black, right?" she asked, even though she knew the answer. The girl wiped her sweaty palms on her pants and slid out of the booth, taking another deep breath before walking to the counter. The interaction between the barista and her was short but pleasant, and Ivy paid for the coffees.

She made her way back to the table. "One mug of coffee, no cream, no sugar, and one mug of cream and sugar with coffee."

Soren rubbed his hands together then laced his long fingers around the cup. He never liked to use the handle since it was so small and uncomfortable. Taking a sip, he felt more energized and smiled a little to himself.

"So, are you going to tell me what's happened since last month?" he asked nonchalantly, taking another sip. He instantly pushed the cup away, the dark coffee lurking inside nearly sloshing over the rim. He'd burned his tongue and his eyes burned slightly with automatic tears. He hated the feeling of burns, even small ones. "Since we haven't been getting together as often as we used to, B-Besides what just happened," he added, continuing casually but gesturing with some constraint at her nervous fingers.

((asdfgh didn't see your reply gahhhhhh ))

Ivy watched him the same way a child would watch a butterfly for the first time-- eyes full of wonder, lips slightly parted, not wanting to speak or blink or move so as to not shatter the fragile moments. She as well took a sip of her coffee, a pleasant warmth spreading through her mouth, the cream having cooled it down.

She watched him tear up and winced at the question. "Well, I.." Ivy started, taking another sip, gently, quietly, so as to not shatter the moment. "I broke up with James." Vie said finally, bluntly.

"I guess I also learned Thai," she ended with a small laugh.

As soon as “I broke up” reached Soren’s ears, he couldn’t help the little quirk of his lips that threatened him to burst into a full-on grin. He naturally covered it with a lazy hand, then took another sip of his coffee. He was pretty sure that Ivy didn’t think anything was up — he saw her as the type who was oblivious to guys who had an interest in her. Like someone who was sitting across the coffee table from her.

Then the random thought brightened in the corner of his mind: Who the hell is James?

He cleared his throat. “James, huh,” he commented vaguely, his voice mysteriously confusing. He didn’t know who James was, so if he pretended to know James, chances were that Ivy wouldn’t know how Soren thought of James. It wasn’t as if Soren shouldn’t comment — if he didn’t comment, then it looked suspicious right after he asked her the question to begin with. He had to comment in some way. But she only talked about James and the powers. He didn’t want to talk about powers, and he kind of wanted to talk about James, but that would end up in pain —

“How did that one go?” he asked, the words escaping his lips without his notice. He inwardly cringed, wondering if that sentence made Ivy sound like a bad girl.

A bad girl.

Before Soren’s older brother had left, he’d told Soren a lot that he needed to improve his vocabulary. The boy so badly wanted to bang his head against the wall or something. He frowned, immersed in his own little bubble of thoughts that circled the Earth over and over and over again.

Ivy continued sipping, her hair continued frizzing, and the sun continued to shine like it never had before. She noted Soren's nearly imperceptible change in demeanor and wondered briefly if it had to do with her relationship status, but pushed that thought away. Of course not, Ivy scolded herself. He's my friend. Not a love interest. It would be weird.

His comment threw her off. How did that one go? made her almost on edge, like she casually dated and broke up with guys. "Don't be an arse," she mumbled, sipping her coffee. "It went fine. I learned that he's a pothead, though, and once he knew that I knew he thought it was great to just reek of it. It wasn't." Ivy refused to add in the fact that she broke up with him over text, and that he was expecting her over that night to go to the cinema. He was a sweet guy, he really was, but just an idiot.

"So, are you going to tell me what's happened since last month?" Ivy mimicked, a small smile back on her face to replace her slightly sour mood, "Or just sit there and stare at me until we finish our coffees?"

His fingers started tapping on the table — precisely at the same time when the sugar container toppled over. The packets spilled out, as if trying to reach for Soren. He barely restrained a jump; he had to stop doing that, that thing when he felt something too strongly and it affected the objects around him somehow. Quickly, he organized it and put it to the side neatly, nodding with a smile at the girl by the counter who had been startled by the sound.

Soren turned towards Ivy, quickly moving on. “I—“ He cleared his throat, which had turned dry at some point. He hadn’t noticed. “I’m not staring.” He averted his eyes from her face right then and, after realizing he had been staring, he shut them tightly closed, chastising himself. “I was just…” What had he done in the past month? He’d… bought groceries and walked around. He’d watched at least twenty movies. He’d gone to Bacchus. “I just, you know. I did stuff,” he finished lamely. He coughed afterward, having drunk his coffee too quickly. It’d been awkwardly pushed into his throat. He made a sour face, scrunching up his nose and frowning.

Ivy also jumped at the sudden movement, sparks dancing around the rim of her mug. She silently willed them away, and it took longer than she thought it would to make that happen. The girl wondered how others would react. Soren took it well because he too was being affected, but what about her mum and dad? What about her sister, or her other friends who was she kidding, her only friend was Soren, or.. or even someone at the labs. What if she was in the middle of an experiment, in the middle of a lab demo or a project and she just started sparking up like that? What would happen?

Vie snapped back to reality pretty quickly, and laughed softly to her friend's response. "You were," she said softly, "but no matter. Continue."

She watched him stammer through his reply, noting the slight blush rising up his pale neck. The girl sipped her coffee. "Stuff?" Ivy prompted, raising an eyebrow. "Elaborate. I'm not one to judge."

"Well, not to judge too harshly. But anyway. Go on."

I think the place to draw the line is making them die/get injured/do something with no jurisdiction or reason/go completely nuts. When I said that he was blushing I really just picked it up contextually -- Soren has a crush on her, he was "chastising himself" for stammering and stuff, and that he was staring -- so I figured it would be a little tidbit to add on detail-wise. (Voila~)

“I…” Soren’s eyes became pleading, begging. “I just… did nothing. In particular.” Oh, I got angry one time at Bacchus because this woman was trying to force a man into something I don’t really want to know about, and the chairs in the club started shaking like there was an earthquake except there wasn’t one, it was just me. “I guess I went to the club. And danced.”

He was going to punch himself. A month without Ivy — who was he kidding, he thought about her every day, it was the same thing as seeing her every day that month, practically — and he’d done nothing. It was like Ivy was the only fun in his life. That was sad.

Soren sagged in his chair, putting his head in his hands. He usually wasn’t that expressive with how miserably he thought of himself, but he thought a Saturday afternoon was as good as any time he’d get to feel pathetic. His fingers ran through his hair over and over and over, as if he were trying to make his useless thoughts go away so he could concentrate.

Oh! “I’ve been writing letters to my brother!” he exclaimed, suddenly satisfied that he had something to say. Granted, it was just moving his fingers for a few hours, but it was something good that happened that month. “Marianna — you know, Aiden’s wife — she got pregnant.” He smiled at Ivy in a restrained form of excitement and delight, but there was some sadness too. Aiden was fading and moving further and further away from Soren. “They’re thinking up so many names, it’s ridiculous.” He propped his head up on his chin and looked at the rest of the café, angling his face away from Ivy. “He’s ridiculous.”

Ivy nodded, sipping more coffee. She could feel the buzz, the small little jolts of caffeine running through her just like the electricity, almost exactly like the electricity, and oh god it's happening again damnit--

The girl wrapped her hands around the porcelain mug so tightly that she thought it would break, and forced a smile onto her face when Soren replied. "Oh, really? I haven't really been to Bacchus. Too loud." Ivy scrunched up her nose, and laughed softly. "Maybe we should go there sometime."

Ivy flinched slightly at the loud outburst, but recovered quickly, back into her bouncy self. "She did?" The girl replied, sipping. "That's the best part, though. Names. There are soooooo many different names out there; the hard part is picking which one."

Out of the blue a very sharp, unpleasant feeling embedded itself in her head. Ivy winced and shut her eyes, setting the mug down. This had been happening more frequently but she, like so many other things, thought nothing of it. It was a headache. It happens.

With her eyes closed and lips pursed an image crossed her mind. It was a mammogram, a small white image surrounded by a sea of grainy black. The image was gone as soon as it had came, but that hadn't stopped Ivy from recognizing what it was of. She opened her eyes hesitantly and blinked a few times, the sunlight making her eyes sensitive.

"A girl. You're going to have a niece," Ivy mumbled, staving off the remnants of the headache. "Marianna's having a girl."

“Ah, no,” Soren answered her instantly. Then he cut back again, trying to calm down. Him being excited and around Ivy at the same time conjured a very unpredictable Soren Rhee. “Bacchus isn’t anything interesting. Plus most of the people there are old.” He didn’t want to go back there; what if someone else pissed him off and made him shatter all the glasses at the bar? Someone would get hurt, and Soren was too afraid.

He sputtered while taking a sip, the coffee having a miniature explosion in its pretty white cage. Urgently, he took a napkin and started to clean up the cup, glad that none of it had gotten on Ivy. Not only would that have been embarrassing and humiliating, but it would also have been incredibly embarrassing and humiliating since it was Ivy. “You have precognition, too?” His eyes were wide, somewhat horrified. “Just how many things can you do, Ivy?” he asked gravely, frustrated. He’d had a secret hope that one of them was normal — at least he could be mostly sure that his family was.

His frown deepened as he noticed the pain written on her face. She was obviously trying to dismiss it, being Ivy, and he usually would have worried about it in silence, but the powers she had — there was a high probability that they were the problem. He wondered if there was more pain if one had more powers. “Are you all right? Do you need some aspirin?” He had actually brought along some today; he usually didn’t have headaches with his powers, but keeping them under control for a long time sometimes caused them.

Ivy blinked again, and laughed softly. "Apparently so." She grabbed her napkin and began to wipe part of the table, light brown fading into the white napkin. "And I have no idea." The girl seemed to regain her strength and while there was a slight throbbing in her temples it faded more and more with every passing second. Ivy sipped her coffee; she was almost out, and thought about getting up to get more.

"I'm fine, mum," she teased, "But cheers." Ivy observed him from across the table. She knew that he didn't like making connections like this or getting so close to people, and he seemed pretty shaken up. Ivy couldn't help but feel warm and fuzzy inside; she had a good friend that cared about her well-being and was just as odd -- if not more, but most likely not -- as she.

"Tell me about yours." Ivy said after a few moments. She set her mug down, small sugar granules that didn't dissolve sitting at the bottom. "Your powers, I mean."

Soren coughed on his coffee, gagging reflexively when Ivy called him “mum.” This hadn’t been the first time. He coughed harder to clear his throat, covering his mouth with his inner elbow. And he would go through this pain for many times more, he thought logically, with more disappointment. He calmed down, taking a few deep breaths. His mind felt woozy now, a little dizzy here and there. He felt the world rotating forty five degrees to the left, but everything remained level in his vision. It was a strange sensation, dizzying. His coffee cup started to vibrate very quietly, just slightly, trembling in his confused grip.

“My-y… powers.” His voice dragged itself across the table to her, sluggishly as if through syrup. “I have. Um.” He shook his head, then suddenly everything came back to normal, and his vision lightened. It wasn’t spattered with purple stars anymore. “Oh, my powers. Yeah, uh… I can…” He laid out his palm on the table, gesturing for Ivy’s hand, with a slightly coy and mischievous smile.”Hold your hand just a little higher than the table.”

(( Hella yes, and alright! I just wasn't sure if you forgot about it or not lol. (and if you did, I feel ya bruh) ))

Ivy stifled a laugh watching her friend, quietly covering her own mouth with a small hand. Amusement turned to concern as he was still coughing and she could feel something off, something shaking, but whether it was her leg bouncing underneath the table or a different source didn't matter. Ivy nodded, encouraging him to say more, and took a final sip of her lukewarm coffee, finishing it off. She got a burst of sugar at the end, granules sitting on her tongue. "Sure." Vie murmured, cautiously unclenching her pale hand and having it hover above the table. Her hand, much like the coffee mug, was quivering slightly.

Soren adjusted her hand's angle towards the light, his fingertips lightly brushing her incredibly soft skin, just enough so that there was a thick shadow beneath it. The shadow seemed to laugh at him, as if it knew he were about to play a game. Then he held hands with the shadow; he placed his palm upon Ivy’s shadow hand. He thought in his mind the general form of a fist and focused that thought on the shadow.

Exactly on cue, Ivy’s hand fisted into a ball.

Soren released his mind’s grip on her shadow almost instantly, not wanting to hurt her. Once, he’d left nail marks biting into his own skin when he’d tested the umbrakinesis on himself. He hadn’t acted quickly enough to lessen the focus of his thoughts. Now, since he’d stopped so quickly, one would’ve dismissed his power as a trick of the light. But Soren watched Ivy closely for any change in her expression.

Soren brushed her hand softly and she unconsciously shocked him, feeling a pang of something inside her that she couldn't exactly explain. She felt a blush rising up her fair skin and opened her mouth to apologize, not even registering what was going on, when she felt it. Ivy quickly glanced down to see that her hand was a fist, knuckles protruding and the small freckle on her finger warped and stretched. As soon as it happened, however, it was gone; she blinked and her hand was back to normal, albeit shaking slightly more than it had been before. Throughout all of this, Soren hadn't even touched her hand but her shadow instead, and ten thousand questions raced through her head, seeking an answer inside her vast internal library, but still nothing, nothing at all could explain what the hell had just happened.

"Shadows?" Ivy said softly, the word dragging out through her pink lips. "You can control shadows?

"Being a human Google sucks," Ivy retorted, letting out a laugh, "because now you'll just ask me questions instead of looking them up yourself." The girl grabbed a sugar packet and idly toyed with it with her still-quivering fingers. She glanced at her friend, still not completely believing of what had just happened, and finally gave a small smile. "I miss being around you, Ren," she said just soft enough for him to hear. "We haven't hung out in so long and I just miss it. You're really the only one that gets me, I think, and I forgot about how much that meant to me.."

He was a creature of habit for little things. "Well," he murmured, still stirring. He wasn't looking at her, and the light above their table cast shadows over his eyes, blurring them with darkness. "Well, I'm always here. I guess."

He leaned towards her, his head tilted towards her hands resting on the table. He started playing with her shadows, and her fingers danced with the rhythm of his own. If Ivy didn't look, she couldn't see that his dark eyes were watching her, even if his head were tilted downwards.

((I dunno and I dunno. We can have other people join in, maybe someone around their age? Or we could move to the park maybe? Let's add some action. :D))

Ivy laughed more, but it was quieter, more self-conscious. She didn't necessarily like drawing attention to herself; more times than less she would have someone recognizing her as the girl who was on the cover of Time, or who met the Prime Minister, or who nearly broke the GSCE's grading system. That girl was only a facet of her, and she hated other people only seeing that part.

The light streaming in made her a little tired, and she slumped back against the soft cushion that covered the booth. "Yeah." She felt a small, almost tugging, feeling at her fingers and tried shifting them around so as to not trigger the sparks again. Her eyes were fixed on a couple outside, maybe around their age, laughing and smiling. She smiled to herself idly and glanced down at the table. Her eyes widened when she saw what Soren was doing, her fingers lightly tapping the table. Ivy tried to make it stop, but it was futile. He was in control.

Ivy met his eyes. "Very clever."

((I agree with both of what you said~ :3 ))

Soren’s lips slowly stretched into a cat’s crooked smile, mischievous and also very obvious with what he was thinking. But it passed quickly, and the remnants of happiness from courting a human Google flickered in his eyes. He moved her thumb to push at the side of her index finger, as if he were lightly chastising her for noticing that he had been looking at her. Then he withdrew, laughing lightly and trying to forget what she had seen. He saw that everywhere every day and it was painful when it was people his age. He had dated once or twice before but the longest those relationships had lasted was around a month at the most.

“So, where would you like to go now, princess?” he asked, leaning comfortably back into the booth. He felt strangely light after confessing to someone about the abnormal things that were happening to him. It felt a little more real now, but in a way that didn’t seem to portend any harm for him. Maybe a lot of people were like him; he didn’t know, which meant they hid really well. He could hide, too – and nothing would happen.

Ivy could feel when Soren's grip on her shadow loosened, and she wiggled her fingers hesitantly. They moved on their own, free from shadow and control, and she smiled. "Possibly the park, dearest prince?" The girl replied back, adopting a heavier accent and a pseudo-royal air. "We mustn't be slow; this weather was made for a stroll!"

She grinned and stood up, sliding out of the booth. Ivy grabbed her friend's hand and tugged impatiently, like a five-year-old wanting ice cream, trying to get him to stand as well.

((Can you put up a reply in the park? Also-- sorry for the short post. Musical season is killing me and sleep, while not necessary, is very very good.))
