Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments First Quarter Challenge: One, Two, Buckle My Shoe
1. One, two,
Buckle my shoe;
finish a series

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Finished the Harry Potter Series

2. Three, four,
Open the door;
read a new genre or author (or both for those who are game)

The Book Thief - New Author
The Martian - New Author, New Genre I don't pick up science fiction. I usually stick in the realm of fantasy and paranormal. I loved this book

3.Five, six,
Pick up sticks;
finish a previously unfinished book

Matched - I started this book right after the second book was released and never finished. Not because I didn't like, but because I got distracted. This was around the time I started reading Stephen King.

4. Seven, eight,
Lay them straight;
read a trilogy or small series (at least 4 books) in order

Wake, Fade, Gone - Interesting trilogy. Didn't care much for the second book

5. Nine, ten,
A big, fat hen;
read the thickest book on your TBR

The Stand Not sure it's the absolute longest, but it is stupid long

6. Eleven, twelve,
Dig and delve;
read an old favourite

Goodnight Tweetheart - Love this book, it makes me laugh. After struggling to get through the Stand, it definitely provided the relief of an easy, entertaining read.

7. Thirteen, fourteen,
Maids a-courting;
read a romance novel

The Time Traveler's Wife

8. Fifteen, sixteen,
Maids in the kitchen;
read a book that takes place in a prairie or has food on its cover

Big Little Lies

9. Seventeen, eighteen,
Maids a-waiting;
read a book you've been waiting to read

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West - I love everything about the Wizard of Oz and I had been putting off reading this book for a long time. I'm glad I stopped waiting and can't wait to get on to the next books.

10. Nineteen, twenty,
My plate's empty.
read the last book on your tbr list

Shadow and Bone - Picked up this book because the author is going to be at a book festival that I'm going to in early March.

Came late to the quarterly challenge, page 5

5/5

Challenge Complete Now that I have made it through my initial goal of 5, I'm going to try to make it through the entire challenge.

10/10
Completed 3/23/15

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments February Challenge

Station Eleven
Finally got a hold of this book and read it :)

Hopefully I can get either the book or audio before the end of the month. There are 4 copies at my library but I'm still 4th in line for requests. Getting the book itself will be the challenge.

Edit
I honestly don't think I'm going to be able to get a hold of this book in time, so my ammended monthly challenge to myself is to finish a book that I started last June.
The Stand

Update
I got through a 100 pages yesterday and am going to try to get through 100 pages a day so that I can finish this book. I really don't want to mark it DNF. 2/16/15

Update 2
I finally made it into the four digits on The Stand. I can taste the end. I just hope I make it there soon. 2/21/15

Update 3
Finished...Never want to read that book again...

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1975 comments I love the Pop Sugar Challenge. I haven't signed up for it but I really like that it makes you read such a variety of styles and genres of books. I may look into that one for next year. I also think it is great you are trying to make a dent in the books you own. I need to make an effort to stop buying books and to actually read the ones I own. It is just hard to stop buying. Good luck with your challenges.

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments Additional Reading Goals:
I started reading Stephen King in October of 2013. I had been traumatized at a young age by movies like Chuckie and Poltergeist when my parent's didn't realize that I was hiding in the hall while they watched horrors after I had been put to bed. When I was in grade school I went to a slumber party and my friends decided to watch It. I had nightmares for months afterward. Well I have finally gotten over the traumas of horror and have started reading my way through Stephen King's novels. I'm trying to read them in publication order, we will see how well that works out for me. This particular reading goal doesn't have a timeline. It's just a goal to get through. Novels that I have already read have been left off the list

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments 6K Challenge!

1.Parties are often thrown to celebrate milestones, and this one is to celebrate our incredible 6,000 member milestone. Read a book where the main character goes through a major life milestone or read a book that was written in a major milestone year in your life.
Fade Two main characters graduate from High School

2. Friends and conversation are the life of any party, so we invited our closest friends - that’s all of you! Read a book that was recommended to you by a friend or read a book that includes written communication (letters, invitations, emails, text messages, etc.)
Goodnight Tweetheart A book in Tweets

3. Themed decorations, favors, and even costumes help put everyone in a festive mood, so we encouraged everyone to come dressed as their favorite literary character. Read a book where the characters wear different clothing than you usually do or read (or re-read) a book with a favorite character of yours. Daughter of Smoke & Bone I really enjoyed the Masquerade scene in this book

4. Our party wouldn’t be complete without good food, so we spent a day baking all sorts of cakes. It’s hard to know exactly when bread became cake, but the Roman poet Ovid references birthday cake in his book The Tristia of Ovid. The English were also some of the first to bake cakes. Read a book that takes place in Europe or read a book has to do with cooking.
Matched - There was cake that was served at the Match Banquet and at the Final Banquet for the main character's grandfather. They described it as only a person who only savors chocolate cake a few times in their life, euphoric.
Days of Blood & Starlight - Briefly takes place in Prague to cover the European end of the challenge

Completed! 2/21/15

Just in case anyone lives in the DFW area. This book event is happening at the Irving Convention center March 7, 2015. I am going to this event. If anyone else would like to meet up, I'd love to meet some people from this group!

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments With the North Texas Teen Book Festival fast approaching, I'm trying to get as many books read as possible. A lot of the these authors have been on my to read list for years and now I have an opportunity to meet many of them. Unfortunately I a lot of the books for these authors I collected during the time I worked for a book company that participated in the book stripping program. I deem these my bathtub reads or it's ok if they get ruined reads so they aren't really appropriate for author's signatures. But I do have my Vladmir Tod books ready!

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments In my Popsugar Challenge, I put Golden Son in the "book with terrible reviews category" because I did not like Red Rising very much. Although a lot of the elements of Red Rising that bothered me were still present in Golden Son, I was very surprised with the book. Enough to consider reading the last book when it eventually comes out.

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments Since I didn't really start properly using this site till about September of last year, I feel like my reading challenge of 55 books seems off when looking at the books marked as read in 2014. I went through my Read books list to see which books I actually read in 2014 and found that number to be 29 as opposed to 10. I was a retail manager back then so I'm actually impressed I got that much reading done.

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments Well, I'm definetly getting to the point in the Popsugar Challenge that is harder. Looks like it's time to start reading specific books. Good thing my yearly goal of total books read is a bit more than the Popsugar Challenge

Winter (winter9) | 5062 comments I found this challenge on your place here and decided to do it!
need to change some things though like hometown and initials. and how do you interpret "a book that made.you cry"? is it to re-read a book that made me cry or to wait until a bool makes me cry and use that?

message 20: by Stephanie (Chinchillita) (last edited Feb 18, 2015 07:43AM) (new)

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments Well, I got really lucky with "a book that made you cry.' I read the Harry Potter series for the first time, so those aren't actually re-reads and the last book made me a crying, sniffling mess. This challenge is for the year, so you still have lots of time to find a book that gets those emotions going. None of the books on my list are re-reads and not all the books that I do read will fit in a category. Having no re-reads on that list is part of my personal challenge. I'll make my GoodReads yearly challenge before this one with things that I will read again this year. Here's some stuff to help you with "Hometown."
https://www.goodreads.com/places

I found two books that apparently take place in the small north Texas town I grew up in (or at they have the same name at least)

As for initals, mine are SD so I will read either Sarah Dessen, Sarah Dunant, or Sylvia Day. What are yours? Maybe I can help.

There is also a discussion group here for this. One of the mods noticed a lot of members in this group doing the Popsugar Challenge.
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

And for a book the year you were born,
https://www.goodreads.com/genres
all you need to do is add the year you were born in the search bar.

I think this is one of the best reading challenges I have ever participated in because it's forcing me out of my normal book comfort zone! Hope you have as much fun as I am!!

Winter (winter9) | 5062 comments And the one with bad reviews? Did you like the one you read?

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments I chose my bad review book because of 6. An author under 30. I read Red Rising for that category and didn't like. I was really surprised that it won 2014 GoodReads Debut Author award. Normally, I'm more in sync with the choices. The second book came out just before I read Red Rising and since I didn't like the first, I put Golden Son as my bad reviews. It's probably the most loosely interpreted category that I will have in the entire challenge. But, in all fairness, no matter if you pick up a classic or the current number one on the New York Bestsellers, there will always be a bad review by someone.

message 23: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5062 comments yeah that's what I thought too. I don't want to read something that is just plain bad I think. But for example Wuthering Heights? I have never read it, always thought I should and I have heard much negative.

message 24: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 5062 comments I cleaned for her, so it's fun to read an author you know so well and have followed since beginning. Her crime book is just hardback so has been too expensive for me, but will buy it for Easter. Is it just in Norway we read crime for Easter or is it a international thing? :)

I am taking a much needed break from YA novels. I'm focusing on regular fiction and catching up on my listopia books, personally owned books, and getting through Soul Eater. Where there maybe a spattering of YA in the mix, most of this month will be focused on reading through the 2014 GoodReads nominees.

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments August Challenge

I have gotten really lax about what I do in my monthly challenges. Add that with the few weeks I had to take off due to work and my reading habits just got knocked off track. So with August, I plan on getting back to the basics. The goals of this month are:
1. Finish the books in my various book clubs
2015 Reading Club
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared

Vaginal Fantasy Book Club
Uprooted
Moon Called

r/Dallas Reads all the Books!
What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions

My Borrowed Books That I Must Give Back to My Friend Before He Thinks I Stole Them Because I've Had Them For 2 Months...
The Lies of Locke Lamora
The Name of the Wind Officially giving up on this book. I read 300+ pages and it never got better

2. Get caught up with my library books
The Hanged Man
The Girl on the Train
Armada
I Was Here
I Am Princess X
Interview with the Vampire

Although my focus will not be on advancing my Yearly and 3rd Quarter "Clearing the Shelves" goals, but I feel like it will help focus my reading again and get me back on the ball while still meeting some of the requirements of other goals.

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments Second Quarter Challenge

1. Read a book about time travel.

2. Read a book where a character makes an impetuous decision. The Princess Bride 4/3/15

3. Read a book that takes place in the Spring. The Husband's Secret 4/9/15

4. Read a book with water on the cover or that takes place on the water.

5. Read a steampunk book.

6. Read a book that has been on your TBR list the longest.

7. Read a book that takes place at a college or during spring break.

8. Read a book where weather plays an important part to the plot. The Red Pyramid Maybe bending the rules just a bit here, but the main characters can manipulate elements.

9. Read an old favorite or a book you have been putting off reading. Inkheart This is one of my favorite books. Imagine being able to read characters in and out of books!

10. Read a book of poetry or a book about a poet.

11. Read a book that was released in 2015 or the newest book on your TBR list. The Heir

12. Spring in his step If you walk with or have a spring in your step, you walk energetically in a way that shows you are feeling happy and confident. Read a book that has a character who exhibits these characteristics or an action genre book. One Plus One Jess tries her hardest to make things better for her and her two kids. She is positive in bad situations. She smiles even if she is crying inside. This is easily the best book I've read this quarter.

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments I have discovered that with the popularity of electronic reading devices, authors have been publishing more and more short stories that are only available in eBook format. As a person who loves the feel of a physical book, this is difficult for me to get over, but I do want to read small additions to the stories that I enjoy. This list is just for me to keep note of what I want to get.

Night of Cake & Puppets
The Remedy
The Recovery
The Seeds of Wither

Stephanie (Chinchillita) (chinchillita) | 427 comments The Stand ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
Oh dear. This is my first one star rating and I feel slightly terrible in my opinion of this book. Firstly, I do enjoy Stephen King's book. The Stand, however, took me over nine months to trudge through. I feel like the story itself had a lot of promise and if I had gotten a hold of an early edition of this book, I don't think I would have had as much trouble getting through it. It still would have been a challenge, but I doubt it would have taken me the better part of a year to get through. The edition I bought the June 2011 Complete and Uncut edition from Anchor Publishing. I was so excited when I picked up the book just a few days before a two week long trip for work that was going to leave me with ample time on my hands.

The back of the book reads, "When a man escapes from a biological testing facility, he sets in motion a deadly domino effect, spreading a mutated strain of the flu that will wipe out 99 percent of humanity within a few weeks. The survivor who remain are scared, bewildered, and in need of a leader. Two emerge - Mother Abagail, the benevolent 108 year old woman who urges them to build a community in Boulder, Colorado; and Randall Flagg, the nefarious "Dark Man," who delights in chaos and violence." Sounds great! It even started out great, everything that I expected from a King novel. Pair that with the fact that I got a small cold while reading this book and I had a great time getting the bejeezus scared out of me. But as the novel progressed, it became painfully clear this book was going to extend way beyond that general description.

(view spoiler)

I think I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if I had gotten a hold of an older publication. The book is already extremely long to begin with, but the uncut version made it unbearable. I can't even count how many times a read a section and thought to myself "what was the point of that?!" I can say that I am glad to have finished it. I was worried that this book was going to be marked as DNF. But if there are any first time readers out there that are excited about their first read of The Stand, I urge you to get an abridged edition (I cannot, cannot believe I just said that) or an older publication that isn't marked "complete and uncut."

Winter (winter9) | 5062 comments That's good to know! Feels wrong to get a shorter version, but will think on it. Though I already have the uncut in DTB though. But never gotten to it. Startet more than once. I would like to read all of Stephen King though I believe and if I take that as a challenge I will nead to read the Stand too:P
He is a great author!

Reading through Stephen King is one of my personal goals too. He's great. Like I said in the review, I don't think it's 'cheating' (I use that word for lack of a better one) if you get an older publication. It won't be considered abridged since that was the original publication. I found out after I had gotten past the 1000th page that my library has the audio book to the specific edition I have. I think it would have been easier for me to listen to, especially when I got to sections that were really slow for me. Let me know when you get around to starting it! Good luck!

Winter (winter9) | 5062 comments Hehe thanks. ^^ Will probably need it. I will probably read the ones I have on kindle first though. I bought some for vacation last year, but I didn't read them all :)

Winter (winter9) | 5062 comments Could you look at my corner and see if I have forgotten some? I don't know if you have already read some novellas or collcetions and I just couldn't find a good list anywhere.

Winter (winter9) | 5062 comments Thanks :)

I think maybe some novellas is in his collections, if so, would you read them double or just skip them?

I have read quite a few of his books already, but I want to read them all. Most is a long time ago.

The Long Walk is my favorite maybe, read at least twice. Scary in a hunger game kind of way (what is mankind capable of in terms of entertainment). Remember I almost threw it many times when reading it.
