Okay I'm obsessed! First quarter - (view spoiler)[I am loving the politics of the world. It took me quite a while to understand the different races and why one was so feared/hated but I really enjoyed all the information this slowly imparted to the reader.

The magic was just as fascinating! The Obeya seem to have an easy connection to it that the others have to forge with their blood or coins?

I'm also really liking both Ira and Jazmyne's perspectives equally, which so rarely happens for me in multi-POV books.

Jazmyne is torn between overthrowing her own mother with the rebellion and wanting to stay in her shadow, learn from her, and get her approval. We're going to have to see a more dominant side to her appear soon.

Ira's plan to get close to the throne was a super messy one. I can understand why Kaleisha felt so betrayed and the other Obeah turned on her too. Their chance for escape was only ever slim but she left them to potentially die for her own gain and put on a tough exterior when later confronted about it. I also couldn't see the Doyenne so easily accepting the daughter of those she killed as her shield, when she must surely have realised she couldn't trust Ira.

I hope to see the two perspectives cross over as Ira can learn gentleness from Jazmyne and Jazmyne can learn strength from Ira, I feel. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[Nem overpowered the islander, in disguise as a Bassai, with her water Possession. I can understand Danso's guilt at this attack, as his silence after witnessing her allowed her an easier entrance when no guards were on alert.

I'm glad Zag left with Danso as his death would surely have been the price for staying, after Esheme witnessed Danso with the islander.

I was looking forward to them exploring the Breathing Forest. With a name like that I felt it was sure to be fascinating.

Lilong's perspective was introduced in this quarter as well and I liked seeing Danso and Zaq from her perspective. Despite escaping with her, Danso revealed he still kept many Bassa ideologies. (hide spoiler)]

I got to about page 100 last night and I'm so intrigued. The difference in the magic systems is fascinating. I just want to know more!

So glad you are loving this one too! It has a slightly lower rating so I was worried.

Sadly, I think I need to pause on this one right now for a bit. I'm super intrigued about it but I'm just finding it hard to focus on the plot and actually read. I'm hoping to pick it back up soon!

It's going to be a while before I update again, I'm going on vacation and I sadly can't take this book with me!

Chapter 5
I’m not sure what to think yet. It might just be because English isn’t my native language, but there are a lot of difficult words in here so far, just a lot of words that I don’t really understand which is making it hard to read. (view spoiler)[ I kinda forgot what the book is about, so I have no clue who both of the characters are nor where this is going. It somehow feels like I’ve missed a book, like there’s some background info about both characters that I’m already missing. I like the promise of Ira, breaking out of prison and such. I feel like she’ll end up protecting the doyenne (which will be Jazmyne I think? I’m not sure if that was indeed called a doyenne, but that’s the queen right?). What’s the yielding and what is pickney??? Like I said, I feel like I’m missing info. I thought I liked Ira, but she sure turned on her friend reaaal quick, so I like her a lot less now - loyalty is important man. (hide spoiler)]

I'm 150 pages into the book from last month and didn't manage to complete it so will carry on with the BR now :)

(view spoiler)[I agree that this book is quite a difficult one to get into. English is my first (and only) language and I found it one I struggled to fully keep track off too. I did love all I initially read though, despite how complex it all was. It feels like a book you just have to give up trying to understand and hope everything gets revealed later on lol.

Ira's betrayal was horrible to read about! I understand her motives but it was still a horrendous move. I wonder if she will ever get her friendship back or has made herself a new enemy? (hide spoiler)]

Legit though I'm like 'oh cool I'll plan 4 BOOK THIS WHOLE MONTH there's no way I won't read these o-o Well yeah I just always find other things to read than what I'm meant to :) I like the planning of reading but not the doing of the reading. Same with readathons.

Because we are all incredibly organised people :p And when it comes to doing the task, it takes too long :p And there's always things we'd rather be doing? Like mood reading something we just want to pick up for the sake of it

Yeah exactly, I always plan loads of fantasy/sci-fi books and then I just want to read something light and smutty so I end up reading loads of those 😂

I've finally started reading this one again. I went back and reread a few pages and I'm immersed in this world again. It is so dense but such a powerful story.

Oh cool! I wondered if people were finished already XD I'll pick this up after I finish Ember in the Ashes. Dunno if it's smart to be reading another new release first in series but whatever haha

How did you enjoy Ember? I remember really loving that book.

I've been reading this one slowly along with Lore but am hoping to sit down and fly through a chunk of it tonight.

The first 150 pages were 5 star material so I'm not sure why I've been reluctant to dive back into it.
