I have just started writing the first chapter of my next book. I plan to call it 'Skyler's Courage' and it will be about a teenage boy who overcomes a challenges of Selective Mutism and Autism. This is what I have written so far.
Chapter 1 A 13 year old boy named Skyler stands looking at himself in the mirror. In the reflection looking back at himself he sees sparkling blue eyes that remind him of the Hokitika Gorge in the South Island of New Zealand. He visited there while on a campervan trip of the South Island during the recent summer school holidays. His brown, cropped hair has a recent addition of a fringe that covers his right eye when he looks down. A nervous expression is on his face and he keeps swallowing hard. Why is he nervous? He is nervous because it is his first day of high school.
"Skyler, are you ready?" his mother calls from downstairs,
"Coming, Mum," calls Skyler. He quickly leaves his bedroom and heads downstairs, missing two steps and almost slipping over on the way. After grabbing his schoolbag that he'd packed the night before and added his lunch to that morning he follows his mum to the car.
