This book focused a lot on the relationship of the protagonist and this strange boy. (Their relationship becomes very close, obsessive, almost romantic)
Some guesses: Fall by Colin McAdam?
The White Devil by Justin Evans?
Alice, do you remember any female characters?
The location - Britain, U.S., etc.?
The cover image?

None of those unfortunately :/I don't remember any female characters (perhaps there were some female teachers?)
It was set in Britain I believe.
Something Dangerous by Patrick Redmond? Also published under a different title The Wishing Game. The strange boy in it is called Richard Rokeby.

No problem! I haven't actually read it, but I was searching for a similar book a while back (Scarecrows) and the Patrick Redmond was one of the suggestions, which is why it rang a bell.
Shelved as "Something Dangerous" but at the top of the thread they force us to pick the most commonly shelved edition, which is the alternate title "The Wishing Game."

I believe the book is written as a flashback. It's set in a boarding school (for all boys I believe) and the protagonist is bullied, not only by the students but also by the latin teacher.
There's a boy in the school who is distant and strange and whom the protagonist befriends, and starts to pretty much worship. Which the protagonists' friend(s) worry about. This friendship radically changes the protagonist's personality and perspective on life.
Then there's a murder, or murders, that the strange boy and the protagonist are mixed up with (or they caused it).
There's a bit of mystery, and also some paranormal/cult-like aspects if I recall correctly. It's overall a very dark book.
I would be very grateful if someone can tell me which book this is! :)
