Landmarks & Tasks

1. Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain

Antoni Gaudí, the visionary and often whimsical architect behind many of Barcelona’s most celebrated buildings, was hired to take over the construction of the city’s Roman Catholic basilica in 1883. Until his sudden death in 1926, Gaudí lovingly labored on this masterpiece, but was only able to complete less than half of it. Several architects have worked on it since and in 2010 the nave was finished and consecrated by the Pope. Hundreds of workers still arrive daily to work on it, in hopes to have it completed by 2026, the centenary of Gaudí’s death. The cathedral towers above the city with its magical collection of drip-castle spires. On the inside, intense beams of sunlight filter through stained glass to illuminate a forest of columns. Even though unfinished, it is visited by over four million visitors each year.

2. Hassan Tower in Rabat, Morocco

Construction on this beautiful, but unfinished tower began in 1195. It was intended
to be the largest minaret of the largest mosque in the world. Progress on both ceased when the sultan-architect, Yacoub el-Mansour, died in 1199. Much of the unfinished construction site was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755, leaving only the tower, standing at 144 feet (half of its intended height), the vast marble floor and 200 supporting columns that show the massive footprint once planned for the unfinished mosque. The tower’s intricate decorative inscriptions and patterns on the exterior mirror other architectural wonders by el-Mansour, such as the Giralda Belltower in Seville, Spain. Today, Hassan Tower is an important historical and tourist complex
in Rabat and was designated UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.

3. Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea

The Ryugyong Hotel looms like a giant spaceship above the skyline of this capital city, holding the official title as the world’s tallest unoccupied building. Construction on the 105-story hotel began in 1987 and was slated to open in time for a 1989 World Festival of Youth and Students. However, due to engineering problems and economic depression, construction ended. Attempts to restart work have been unsuccessful. But in 2018, LED lights were installed on the exterior, which allowed the massive building to be used for impressive light shows during nighttime events. The interior is still primarily unfinished concrete with no signs of the 3,000 guest rooms, seven revolving restaurants, or the nightclubs, lounges, and casino that were all in the original plans. If ever finished, it would certainly prove to be an amazing place to visit!

4. Crazy Horse Memorial, South Dakota, USA

The Crazy Horse Memorial project began in 1948 as a response to Mt Rushmore's depiction of white leaders in a region that was historically populated by Native Americans. The monument is of Chief Henry Standing Bear, the Oglala Lakota Chief
who successfully fought Custer’s army at the Battle of Little Big Horn. When completed, the memorial will depict the tribal leader on horseback with his left arm pointing southeast. It will be four times the height of the Statue of Liberty and will dwarf Mount Rushmore which is located just 17 miles away. The work’s Polish-American sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski, worked alone on the project until his death in 1982. Since then volunteers and family continue the work with funding they receive through private donations and admission fees. Over one million people a year come to visit and learn
the inspiring story behind the landmark.

5. National Monument in Edinburgh, Scotland

Construction of this monument that sits on the summit of Calton Hill in Edinburgh, began in 1822 and was intended to commemorate the victims of the Napoleonic Wars (1803-15). Before fundraising was complete, King George IV had the foundation stones laid and 12 columns were erected. The design was intended to exactly replicate that of the Acropolis with all the stones quarried in Scotland. But the funds never materialized and construction was halted in 1829, earning it nickname “Edinburgh’s Folly”. There have been many discussions about how to use the unfinished memorial throughout the years including the possibility of it being a museum site. But so far, it stands incomplete even though it is a popular site for picnics and Sunday walks.

6. Mingun Pahtodawgyi in Mingun, Myanmar

In the small town of Mingun, along the banks of the Irrawaddy River, you will find the massive unfinished pagoda, Mingun Pahtodawgyi. Construction began in 1790 by King Bodawpaya, who wanted to build the largest pagoda in the world. Intending to have a 50 meter (500 feet) high stupa, the unfinished pagoda only reached a third of its height before construction stopped due to a prophecy the locals started, proposing the king would lose his kingdom if the pagoda was completed. The superstitious king took the prophecy quite seriously and construction was never resumed. Even though it has become increasingly decrepit and has sustained earthquake damage, it is still a popular landmark. To give you an idea what the finished pagoda would have looked like there is a whitewashed 5 meter model along the banks of the river.

7. Bara Kaman in Vijayapura, India

In the center of the city is one of its most famous heritage sites known as Bara Kaman
or Twelve Arches. It is the unfinished mausoleum of Ali Adil Shah II, who ruled from 1656 to 1672 AD. The plan was to build a more beautiful mausoleum than that of his father, but the rivalry was strong and his father murdered him rather than let Gol Gumbaz (his tomb site) be overshadowed by his son’s. Today it stands roofless, displaying the basalt arches on a 20 foot elevated platform. It’s interesting to know
that no cement was used in the raising of the arches. Instead, iron rings were used to hold the stones together. Though unfinished, Ali Adil Shad is buried here, along with his family members. The site is one of the most striking ruins in the city and the beautiful gardens surrounding it are well-maintained.
