Let me know what book you guys want to read alongside Memories of Ice in the month of March. You can vote for anything as long as it's either a continuation of a series we're already reading, or the start of a new series. It can also be a standalone if you wish, and it must be either sci-fi of fantasy (or a sub-genre of them).
If you see some suggestions you like then go ahead and second them and when the month is drawing to a close I will do another poll where everyone can vote and we'll have our next book chosen! :D
Thanks so much to everyone who is taking part, you make reading as a group so fun!
Kaitlin x

I nominate something by Guy Gavriel Kay (not sure what as I have a few of his books and I know some are standalones so anyone who likes this idea then let me know your thoughts too :D)

message 3: by Brock (new)

Brock (brockroberts) | 32 comments Otherland: City of Golden Shadow by Tad Williams because I selfishly want to have people read it.

message 4: by Alex (new)

Alex Willis (fightingokra) | 71 comments How about Illium by Dan Simmons? I only suggest it because it is on my shelf and I need motivation to fit it into my reading schedule.

message 5: by Christine (new)

Christine | 0 comments well looking up both the Tad Williams and Simmons books they both sound interesting. To throw my suggestions into the ring I nominate:

Six Gun Tarot - R.S. Belcher
Armageddon's Children - Terry Brooks
Fire starter - Stephen King

Ungar5 | 25 comments How about City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett?
It's a standalone, so there's no commitment, and it's been getting amazing reviews.
Also, I never read anything by Guy Gavriel Kay, and Iv had Tigana on my TBR for a long time. It's supposed to be really good...

message 7: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (sumsemarie) | 3 comments Hi, how about following

"The Thousand names"(Shadow Campaigns) by Django Wexler
"Heart of the Mirage" (The Mirage Makers) by Glenda Larke
"Hounded" (The Iron Druid Chronicles) by Kevin Hearne
"Furies of Calderon" (Codex Alera) by Jim Butcher
"Thief's Magic" (Milleniums Rule) by Trudi Canavan
"Mage's Blood" (The Moontide Quartet) by David Hair

message 8: by Kyle (last edited Feb 04, 2015 07:09PM) (new)

Kyle (Kaman15) | 5 comments I haven't started reading "red knight" yet, I want to finish "Deadhouse gates" first, so I'm not sure if I want to recommend the follow up. I second "City of Stairs" by Robert Jackson Bennett.
Some others:
"Promise of Blood" - Brian McClellan
"A Darker Shade of Magic" - V. E. Schwab
"The Gone-Away World" - Nick Harkaway
"The Girl with all the Gifts" - M. R. Carey

message 9: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Flores (sabrinaflores) I second Otherland.

Guy Gavriel Kay would be awesome, but I only have A Song for Arbonne.

message 10: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Flores (sabrinaflores) I also have:

*Left Hand of Darkness
(Ursula Le Guin)
*Dune
*Talisman (Stephen King)

message 11: by Chernz (new)

Chernz | 15 comments I second Tigana by Kay. I've read it once before but that was years ago and I'd look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts about it.
Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher is another suggestion that sounds good to me (I have the book sitting here but haven't gotten around to it)

message 12: by Akshay (new)

Akshay (akshay_sauron) | 5 comments I nominate Speaks the Nightbird by Robert McCammon and second The Thousand Names.

message 13: by Brock (new)

Brock (brockroberts) | 32 comments Second for The Thousand Names

message 14: by Phil On The Hill (last edited Feb 05, 2015 05:18AM) (new)

Phil On The Hill (philonthehillexon) I shall go with a couple of those already suggested

"Hounded" (The Iron Druid Chronicles) by Kevin Hearne
"The Girl with all the Gifts" - M. R. Carey
"Foreigner" by C J Cherryh

message 15: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 21 comments Kaitlin wrote: "I nominate something by Guy Gavriel Kay (not sure what as I have a few of his books and I know some are standalones so anyone who likes this idea then let me know your thoughts too :D)"

I suggest Tigana since it seems like his most popular work.

I will nominate Chronicles Of The Black Company or if that is too big, we can just read the 1st book, The Black Company. Black Company was a big influence for Erickson in creating Malazan, he even dedicated book 7 to Cook.

I'll second Foreigner, which is a series that never gets read, win or discuss at all.

message 16: by Otavio (new)

Otavio Galileu (otaviogalileu) | 6 comments Hey guys! I haven't been active in the group yet, but my time is opening up now, so perfect time to start! I'd like to suggest maybe a Sci-Fi book, A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge.

I'll also second Dune and Otherland.

message 17: by Marita (new)

Marita | 3 comments I vote for The Thousand Names and Otherland

message 18: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 21 comments I personally would like to Dee a science fiction book win in March for 2 reasons, this month and Malazan are both fantasy, more importantly I would like to see .ore people read science fiction because science fiction is declining, and fantasy especially Epic Fantasy is so popular these days.

message 19: by Brock (new)

Brock (brockroberts) | 32 comments Oh! A Fire Upon the Deep would be great

message 20: by Christine (new)

Christine | 0 comments I do agree with Kevin that for March (especially for those that want to maybe do both) maybe not do an epic fantasy series. Or at least we alternate the back up between sci if and a fantasy. That would give us much more variety.

message 21: by Teanka (last edited Feb 07, 2015 01:58AM) (new)

Teanka If it has to be a sci-fi, then I second 'Illium' by Dan Simmons. I've wanted to read it ever since it came out as I loved his Hyperion series. I've read all of the other scifi suggestions, all of them great reads and Dune, A Fire Upon the Deep and Left Hand of Darkness are must-reads for any genre lover as well as my favourites. I also love the Foreigner series just as almost everything written by Cherryh J. Carolyn, be it fantasy or sci-fi.

If I may offer my own suggestions, how about reading Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, #1) by Pierce Brown ? It's pretty new, looks promising with mostly good reviews and the story is set on the planet Mars in the far future in a caste - driven society where the Reds are at the bottom. Or maybe Leviathan Wakes (Expanse, #1) by James S.A. Corey ? I've read that one and want to continue on with the Expanse series. This is a space opera story set in the Solar system, a very entertaining read with interesting plot anch characters.
Just my 3 cents'worth.

message 22: by Sam (new)

Sam (scylight) I second

"Furies of Calderon" by Jim Butcher
"Dune"
"The Sword of Shannara" by Terry Brooks

I've had Brooks on my shelf for awhile and I started the book but, the massive similarities between it and LotR upset me so I stopped reading it. However, everything I've read about the series states that after the first Trilogy Brooks writing picks up and he finds himself. So maybe I can slug through it.

I've also got two new nominations

"Green Rider" by Kristen Britain
"The Eyes of God" by John Marco

Sorry if these are books the group has already read. I'm trying to take a more active role in my groups :3

message 23: by Christina (new)

Christina Pilkington | 27 comments Hi everyone! I'm new to the group and am looking forward to doing a read along with you next month.

I'd like to second these nominations:

A Darker Shade of Magic (already preordered it!)
Soulless by Gail Carriger
Thief's Magic by Trudi Canavan
Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher

message 24: by Brock (new)

Brock (brockroberts) | 32 comments Second Soulless

Okay thank you all for the suggestions. I have taken note of all of them, both fantasy and sci-fi, and I will be posting a poll very soon of the most seconded and suggested books so we can vote.
Whilst I appreciate that some of you wish to alternate between sci-fi and fantasy per month as I did not officially state that to begin with this month doesn't have to be either specifically. However, to rectify this and make sure we do live up to the name April and the suggestions for April WILL be a Sci-fi month and I will only ask for Sci-Fi suggestions so we guarantee one for that month (unless March turns out to be voted as a sci-fi in which case it will be exclusively fantasy for April and we shall alternate after that!)
Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. I have a fair few that I've added to my want-to-read list and here is the final run down of them with smiley faces representing the seconds just in case you were curious!
Tigana - Guy Gavriel Kay :) :) :)
City of Golden Shadow - Tad Williams :) :) :)
Ilium - Dan Simmons :)
The Six-Gun Tarot - R S Belcher
Armageddon's Children -Terry Brooks
Firestarter - Stephen King
City of Stairs - Robert Jackson Bennett :)
The Thousand Names - Django Wexler :) :)
Heart of the Mirage - Glenda Larke
Hounded - Keven Hearne :)
Furies of Calderon - Jim Butcher :) :) :)
Thief's Magic - Trudi Canavan :)
Mage's Blood - David Hair :)
Promise of Blood - Brian McClellan
A Darker Shade of Magic - V E Schwab :)
The Gone-Away World - Nick Harkway
The Girl with All the Gifts - M R Carey :)
A Song for Arbonne - Guy Gavriel Kay
The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula Le Guin
Dune - Frank Herbert :) :)
The Talisman - Stephen King
Speaks the Nightbird - Robert McCammon
Foreigner - C J Cherryh :)
The Black Company - Glen Cook
A Fire Upon the Deep - Vernor Vinge :)
Soulless - Gail Carriger :) :)
The Sword Of Shannara - Terry Brooks :)
Old Man's War - John Scalzi
Red Rising - Pierce Brown
Leviathan Wakes - James S A Corey
Green Rider - Kristen Britain
The Eyes of God - John Marco

I'm personally already planning to read The Thousand Names by Django Wexler and Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay in March so even if these don't get voted top I'll be reading them (and maybe making a discussion page for them if there's interest).

I'll be taking the top 6 (all with more than 2 seconds) for the poll which should be up within the next 10 mins so get voting :D Once again thank you all for taking an active role in the group :D

message 26: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 21 comments I will also second Tailsman as it is one of my favorite and Green Rider since I had the book on my TBR for ages.

message 27: by Kevin (last edited Feb 16, 2015 01:11PM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 21 comments I don't think I be read any of the books being voted on since they are either
read a lot on Goodreads and especially read a lot and popular on Booktube, or I just don't like Tad Williams.

I think an author more popular should be read first.

Teanka Kevin wrote: "I think an author more popular sshould be read first. "
Yeah, probably you're right. But then, I've read most of them already and that's the reason I'm not voting on them.
BTW, I even named one of my dogs Tigana :)
