Remember the following:
Everyone is welcome but make sure to use the goodreads spoiler function.
If you come to the discussion after folks have finished reading it, please feel free to post your comments as we will always come back to the thread to discuss the book.
The rules
You must follow the rules of the History Book Club and also:
First rule of Buddy Read:
Respect other people's opinions, no matter how controversial you think they may be.
Second rule of Buddy Read:
Always, always Chapter/page mark and spoiler alert your posts if you are discussing parts of the book.
To do these spoilers, follows these easy steps:
Step 1. enclose the word spoiler in forward and back arrows; < >
Step 2. write your spoiler comments in
Step 3. enclose the word /spoiler in arrows as above, BUT NOTE the forward slash in front of the word. You must put that forward slash in.
Your spoiler should appear like this:
(view spoiler)
And please mark your spoiler clearly like this:
State a Chapter and page if you can.
EG: Chapter 24, page 154
Or say Up to Chapter *___ (*insert chapter number) if your comment is more broad and not from a single chapter.
Chapter 1, p. 23
(view spoiler)
If you are raising a question/issue for the group about the book, you don't need to put that in a spoiler, but if you are citing something specific, it might be good to use a spoiler.
By using spoilers, you don't ruin the experience of someone who is reading slower or started later.
Thanks.

Synopsis:
Flash Boys
Four years after his #1 bestseller The Big Short, Michael Lewis returns to Wall Street to report on a high-tech predator stalking the equity markets.
Flash Boys is about a small group of Wall Street guys who figure out that the U.S. stock market has been rigged for the benefit of insiders and that, post-financial crisis, the markets have become not more free but less, and more controlled by the big Wall Street banks. Working at different firms, they come to this realization separately; but after they discover one another, the flash boys band together and set out to reform the financial markets. This they do by creating an exchange in which high-frequency trading—source of the most intractable problems—will have no advantage whatsoever.
The characters in Flash Boys are fabulous, each completely different from what you think of when you think “Wall Street guy.” Several have walked away from jobs in the financial sector that paid them millions of dollars a year. From their new vantage point they investigate the big banks, the world’s stock exchanges, and high-frequency trading firms as they have never been investigated, and expose the many strange new ways that Wall Street generates profits.
The light that Lewis shines into the darkest corners of the financial world may not be good for your blood pressure, because if you have any contact with the market, even a retirement account, this story is happening to you. But in the end, Flash Boys is an uplifting read. Here are people who have somehow preserved a moral sense in an environment where you don’t get paid for that; they have perceived an institutionalized injustice and are willing to go to war to fix it.

Hello I am Bentley and I want to welcome you to the Flash Boys discussion. The discussion will go from February 16th through April 19th.
Here is the Opposing View which you can come back to and we can all discuss:

All, we do not have to do citations regarding the book or the author being discussed during the book discussion on these discussion threads - nor do we have to cite any personage in the book being discussed while on the discussion threads related to this book.
However if we discuss folks outside the scope of the book or another book is cited which is not the book and author discussed then we do have to do that citation according to our citation rules. That makes it easier to not disrupt the discussion.

It might be nice to know whether those involved with the buddy read have a background in or know about equity market structures or high speed frequency trading before reading the book.
And if you are just learning about this subject area - which more than likely is the bulk of most readers on the buddy read - let us know that too.
We are happy to have both discuss this subject matter.
I have posted about four videos on this subject matter as background.

I have started reading this book. The subject matter is new to me and I find it quite interesting. Looking forward to the discussions and learning a lot about high speed frequency trading.
Welcome Helga - we should learn a lot more than most folks know about - make sure to check out the videos that I have added as well and the articles above.
And be sure to post and discuss the topic discussions - just use the spoiler html and put at the top what you section of the book you are discussing with the page number if possible.

Hi, I'm Kressel, and my knowledge of the stock market is pretty limited. I'm loving the book so far, though! It's made me wonder if all that digging for hydraulic fracturing in Pennsylvania recently wasn't for something even more sinister.

Hello all. Glad to join in on this one. I had been seeing the book discounted on Kindle and had caught a program on NPR about the High speed direct line, so this seemed like perfect timing. I have no particular knowledge of High Speed trading, other than what I've read in the news, and am armed with only a basic knowledge of the market.Intro & Chapter 1
(view spoiler)
Hey all. I too picked this book up on Kindle and enjoyed the Intro and first chapter. I know next to nothing about the stock market so this is new territory for me. I'll try and participate as much as I am able.

Hi All. I'm Teri and will be backing up Bentley on this Buddy Read. I am excited to read this book. I work in IT in the financial sector and am currently teaching a college course in Cyber Criminology, so this is a timely read for me. Response to Maureen

Well Maureen - make sure to post your comments here as we go through the book and I enjoyed your comments on corporate globalization.
I am glad that you are enjoying the read - I have about seven books going at once so I am fine with the schedule (smile).

Maureen wrote: "This book is way too interesting. I won't be able to read as slowly as the schedule. I'll probably finish up this weekend. It's a very interesting read!"Me, too!
Glad to hear you both are enjoying the book, Maureen and Kressel. I've not gone beyond chapter 1 but will dig in more this weekend. Any initial thoughts, Kressel?
Hi, I'm Marc, I will join, just gotta buy the book first! I'll likely be able to restrain myself to reading a chapter a week (I hope), juggling way too many books and articles plus work...
We would love to have you join us Marc. I'm juggling several books as well so you're in good company. Jump on into the conversation when you get the book. We're on to chapter 2 this week.
Are we allowed to talk about Brad yet? 'Coz his wife is an active member of Goodreads. I'm thinking of friending her and telling her about our buddy read. What do you folks say?
We are allowed to talk about chapter 2 now. I'm almost done with this chapter myself. I'll let Bentley make the call on Brad's wife, but I suspect it would be fine. Let Bentley chime in first before asking her.
Yes you can talk about Brad - I have no idea if Brad's wife is on goodreads - that is up to you Kressel. Marc welcome - many of us are juggling 6 or 7 books so we like being able to read another one at the same time in a way that we can discuss it. Hope this helps. And just place your comments in spoilers if you go ahead.
We are on:
Week Two:
Chapters 2 (Brad's Problem) (February 23. 2015 - March 1, 2015)
(pages 23 - 55)
When talking about any Chapter - just place the chapter or page number at the top in bold and the remainder in the spoiler html - so that folks who are up to that section can read it or those who are not can wait. More instructions are on message 2 and 3 if you need them. This is a one thread discussion and that is why.

Kressel I am not sure why you did the citation for Flash Boys that way - first you could simply have typed it and bolded the title and that would have been fine because on a group book discussion thread - you do not have to cite the book you are discussing. Or if you wanted to do it anyway you should have added the book cover, the author's photo and author's link which is the proper way here at the HBC - but remember no link is necessary because this is the book being discussed.
So I removed your post and reposted it - don't use the link that way here - not even necessary for the book we are discussing. But if it were another book that is not the way we do citations here.
Kressel said:
The newest Planet Money episode is relevant to this book. It's all about how the spreadsheet revolutionized finance. It starts way back in 1984, but like Flash Boys, it's about how computers have taken over EVERYTHING.
