Susan Lewallen (susanlewallen) | 808 comments I read The Confessions of Frannie Langton for a book club. It’s the story of a Jamaican slave, forced (mid 19th century) to collaborate with a cruel owner on his ”scientific experiments” to document anatomic differences between blacks and whites. Frannie’s exact part in this was never clear to me. That might be because I started skimming about 20% of the way into the book or it may be a result of the 19th century writing style the author used. I’m afraid I found the latter tedious and I hadn’t the patience to keep rereading to parse the meaning of many sentences. Frannie’s life is terrible and dark, but I was left oddly indifferent to her, other than disgust at the obvious injustices portrayed. I don’t see how this book can be considered a thriller, given the very slow pace. Reading the author’s notes, I believe the book was well researched and true to the appalling treatment of West Indian slaves as well as the discrimination and injustices faced by those who were transported to England, their official “free” status there notwithstanding. This book was not for me and I’m afraid I cannot recommend it. I’ve given it 2 stars because it is competently written, even if not a style I care for, and it seems reasonably well researched.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12850 comments Boom! off my TBR it comes. Your description of the writing style is enough for me to say no to it. I have had problems with other books because of this-so thanks for the review
