One common writing tip I learnt overtime - First drafts are not your final ones and you can always improve it further, there shouldn’t be perfection in the first draft

How do i write poems? My teacher has told me to write a poem on the current situation of the world and I'm clueless as to how I'm supposed to do it

@Yashaswini Malik poems are actually quite easy to write. You just have to brainstorm a bit, jot down all ideas and then just structure it into a poem. That's how I write poems usually.

So I’m currently working on my first novel. I’ve completed the first draft and am editing it before I send it off to Betas and then edit some more and then query agents.

So yeah, I think someone send the first draft is not your last? YES. The writing process TAKES TIME. I’ve been working on my novel for over a year now, and I’m still editing. I finished writing in like 4-5 months, and now I’m going to edit for about 5+ months. It’s a LONG process.

Next, you just gotta write. You just gotta do it. You’ll never have a book unless you write it. And with the tip above, you gotta edit. Once you finish your first draft (WHICH IS AWESOME!!!!!), it’s gonna need loads of work. Put the time in, and I promise you’ll be happy. Put those procrastination triggers aside! Life is busy as it is, so you need all the time you can get writing (or editing 😣).

Those are two big tips I have. I might post more here, but if you’re ever seeking personal advice, I’d be happy to give it to you! (You can PM me)

Anyone have any advice for writing good, strong, female leads? And any ideas on how to avoid repetition?

My advice is to write them like normal women. In my opinion, the super badass "not like other girls" girls are cringy and annoying. I like a good female lead who is comfortable taking charge, but also has their trauma/past that just makes them stronger and more resilient. Think Olivia Benson from Law and Order: SVU, she's my favorite strong female lead!

One of the things that I do, especially for writing papers for classes, is to write down everything that comes to your mind WITHOUT editing it. Then go back a couple times to change the placement of sentences, grammar, description etc. I usually do this a couple times and I end up getting more ideas and better sentences when I edit than when I write.
