Gordon Burnside | 4 comments Probably read this in the late 70's or early to mid 80's

Vague recollections are that is was written a quite popular fiction author of the day, something like a Michael Crichton but I checked his list of books and can't find it.

I can't remember the agency or method employed of wiping out the world population but basically the elite chosen to survive were, at a secret signal, to fly to a remote jungle area of South America where a sealed colony had been built to allow them and only them to survive and repopulate the world.

My interest is piqued by the current pandemic of course, there might be disturbing parallels.

beichst | 172 comments This is a bit of a long shot as it was from 1998, not the 80s. But possibly Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy?

It features a group that is wiping out world population via an Ebola like variant (codenamed Shiva). The 'bad guys' do have a South American hideaway (Brazil).

" John Brittling is that bad guy. He and his organization, the Horizon Corporation, have developed an Ebola like virus code-named Shiva virus with one purpose, the complete annihilation of the human race in order to restore the world to its former state and bring it back under the influence of nature and animals."

You could well be right because that sounds exactly the scenario. In fact you MUST be right. Thank you, I'll look it up.
