Wow! That's a long series! I'm going to be reading Dune and will probably start The Eye of the World. I'm also thinking Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. :)

The Green Knight will definitely be the first movie we see in theaters since March 2020! I've read Sir Gawain countless times and am so psyched for the movie.

Here is what I'm hoping to accomplish...hard emphasis on hoping. lol

The Reincarnationist Papers - Origins Prequel (INFINITE Series) by D. Eric Maikranz Dune (Dune, #1) by Frank Herbert Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Gawain Poet

Forgot one! We're reading this one in my book group so I know I will finish it (and this one was written by my client).
Shelter of Leaves by Lenore H. Gay

message 10: by Elyse (new)

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 569 comments I added some graphic novels and the new Murderbot to my TBR! I'm definitely still sticking with only one physical book. They're just so inconvenient to read! lol

Joshua Van Dereck | 31 comments This is just my second time participating. I have such a hard time sticking to one genre for any length of time at all...

This month, I am planning to read:

Waking Gods (Themis Files, #2) by Sylvain Neuvel Only Human (Themis Files, #3) by Sylvain Neuvel Wayward (Wayward Pines #2) by Blake Crouch The Last Town (Wayward Pines, #3) by Blake Crouch The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley

Depending on how things go, I also have my eye on:

Goldilocks by Laura Lam The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley Kindred by Octavia E. Butler

And, I will definitely be reading these three fantasies, which are very much not Sci-Fi:

Fool Moon (The Dresden Files, #2) by Jim Butcher Taken (Alex Verus, #3) by Benedict Jacka Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots

Themis Files and Wayward Pines are so good! Oooh Goldilocks is only $4.99 Kindle, might nab that and read it this month, we'll see how my month goes.

I would really love to start the Dresden Files soon. I tried the audiobook once but could not handle Spike's (James Marsters) natural accent. lol.

message 13: by Joshua (new)

Joshua Van Dereck | 31 comments The frog in the throat rattle is very aggravating, I agree. I am have read the first 5 Dresden Files books before, and... too much time went by and I am now rereading (listening this time) to the first five before moving on. The series is very much a mash-up of Hardboiled mystery and urban fantasy—very campy and generally quite amusing, but the writing is really uneven. Butcher will follow up a very weak book with a very good one and back again. And it's pretty misogynist—lots of male gaze eye candy description, but that's kind of par for the course with Hardboileds. I think they're generally pretty fun. I also recommend the Benedict Jacka series, which is kind of a tighter, British knock off of the Dresden Files.

How was the Murderbot novel? I read the first four novellas and loved them! Wasn't a big fan of The Cloudroads (also by Wells), which was just a bit too fluffy for me. But Murderbot is such a wonderful exploration of objectification. I love how Murderbot hates meeting peoples' eyes and prefers to watch everyone through surveillance while talking to them. I have heard that the audible of Murderbot has a male reader, which seems odd. I have tended to conceptualize Murderbot as feminine-tinged androgyny; we read the first novella in a sci-fi/fantasy book club I MC and it was kind of interesting to see which readers intuitively used which pronouns for the character...

I've got an official SciFi June Read-A-Thon book Hell Divers (The Hell Divers Series Book 1) by Nicholas Sansbury Smith and the another one that I was just reading because I'm addicted to the series Witness in Death (In Death, #10) by J.D. That's fine, Ren. You don't have to have a blog. Many who participate don't. If you want to be eligible for prizes, go to the starting line post (link is at the top of this thread) and add your name and link to your Goodreads page in the linky. I'm doing the charity giveaway drawing on Saturday so be sure to leave a comment on that post with your email address (or you can message it to me).

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 569 comments Switched out Artemis by Andy Weir for Recursion by Blake Crouch because I can't find my copy of Artemis. lol. Moving the library to another room so I have a couple of totes full of books and I didn't find it under Weir on my shelves. If I finish Recursion quickly then I'll just keep perusing my shelves for sci fi. I'm sure I've got plenty. lol. But Recursion is one of my BOTM that I'm severely far behind on so yay!

I've never heard of Benedict Jacka, thanks for the rec! Yeah, I've heard I need to take Dresden with a big ol' grain of salt. And that's fine, I'll still give it a chance.

I love Murderbot! I didn't feel like it needed a whole novel, I love the novellas, but I did enjoy Network Effect. And actually I did listen to that one. It's funny that you kind of think of MB as female because I think of MB as male! And I'm not sure why...! I haven't read any other of Wells's books.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 569 comments I finished listening to Cibola Burn (The Expanse, #4) by James S.A. Corey yesterday and then also listened to a couple of Audible Plus Originals, shorties, The Neil Gaiman at the End of the Universe by Arvind Ethan David The Reluctant Dragon by Kenneth Grahame and I read Emily the Strange Vol. 1 by Rob Reger . I started listening to The Boi of Feather and Steel (The Girl of Hawthorn and Glass, #2) by Adan Jerreat-Poole today. So dabbling in some fantasy. My nephew is sleeping over for the first time since March 2020 so I probably won't be getting much reading done tonight or tomorrow!

message 23: by Liander (The Towering Pile) (last edited Jun 04, 2021 12:52PM) (new)

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 8 comments I have a buttload of books currently in progress (it feels like I'm never finishing books but only starting new ones lol). Some of them are sci fi. So to start with, my goal this month is to finish these in-progress sci fi books:
Dune by Frank Herbert Dune by Frank Herbert
Stars Above (The Lunar Chronicles, #4.5) by Marissa Meyer Stars Above by Marissa Meyer
Cinder (Chroniques lunaires, #1) by Marissa Meyer Cinder by Marissa Meyers (French translation)
The Third Planet from Altair (Choose Your Own Adventure, #7) by Edward Packard The Third Planet from Altair by Edward Packard (Choose Your Own Adventure)
The Three-Body Problem (Remembrance of Earth’s Past #1) by Liu Cixin The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu (audiobook)

Most of my current library stack is not sci fi, so we'll see what other sci fi I can squeeze in after these! I do have more fantasy on my stack (including several volumes of Lumberjanes).

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 569 comments I finished listening to The Boi of Feather and Steel (The Girl of Hawthorn and Glass, #2) by Adan Jerreat-Poole yesterday and haven't started a new audiobook yet. Joshua Van Dereck | 31 comments Three books down. I quite liked Wayward (Wayward Pines #2) by Blake Crouch , which I think was actually a bit stronger than the first novel in the series. Fool Moon (The Dresden Files, #2) by Jim Butcher is a lot of fun. And I actually just read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, #1) by Douglas Adams for the first time, and thought it perfectly lovely!

British humor and I do not agree. lol. It's too dry. Adams, Gaiman, uhh those 2 stick out.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 569 comments I listened to Invasion of the Body Snatchers by Jack Finney yesterday and just finished it. I had seen the 1978 version in high school sci fi class (the best class) and the 2007 version sometime around when it came out on DVD. It was pretty slow to start but it picked up during the second half and I enjoyed it.
My next audio is not sci fi or fantasy but it was an Overdrive hold that came in so I'm listening to it.
Did not get as much reading done in Recursion by Blake Crouch as I wanted to on Sunday (ended up doing some work) and have only read a couple pages since. Not sure I'll be able to fit in much more during the work week!

Sorry I haven't been around since I checked in at the start. Have been busy with my son's graduation party and then meeting their dad halfway (in Indiana) for both sons to stay with him in Tennessee for two months. I get a break...what?! Sadly, I had to have my cat, Alice put to sleep on Sunday so I'm not in a good place right now. She was 14 years old so had been with us for a long time. I have been reading, trying to keep my mind off the sadness, but it's hard.

Currently halfway through Shelter of Leaves by Lenore H. Gay This book is fantastic!
A quarter of the way through The Reincarnationist Papers by D. Eric Maikranz . The new Mark Wahlberg movie, Infinite, is adapted from this one. I'm a sucker for reincarnation (and I believe it) so really wanted to read this one.
Hoping to start Dune soon.

Looks like you all have been getting some great reading in. Keep it up! :)

Joshua Van Dereck | 31 comments A couple more Sci-Fi titles under my belt. I finished
The Last Town (Wayward Pines, #3) by Blake Crouch
which I found to be a bit of a letdown as a wrap-up for the Wayward Pines series. I also read
Kindred by Octavia E. Butler
which felt dated, though I can see how it must have been shocking in the late 70s/early 80s. In between, I read
Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots
which was a lot of fun (though definitely fantasy and not Sci-Fi). I'm hoping to squeeze in 4-5 more Sci-Fi books this month! Hope you're all having fun with the genre.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 569 comments I have been quiet! I was on vacation in New Orleans and then have been sick for a week! Not Covid, just little old strep and double ear infections. Should've just kept wearing my mask. *sigh*
I finished reading Recursion by Blake Crouch last week (real mindf***!) and also read Beauty and the Beast Lost in a Book by Jennifer Donnelly (for some fantasy). I started reading Exhalation Stories by Ted Chiang last Friday but have only made it to the third story due to being too sick to read (dizzy, unable to focus).
I finished listening to Nemesis Games (Expanse, #5) by James S.A. Corey yesterday and will listen to all of The Vital Abyss (Expanse, #5.5) by James S.A. Corey today while working from home (missed work Mon-Wed, worked from home yesterday). And then I will start listening to Babylon's Ashes (The Expanse, #6) by James S.A. Joshua Van Dereck | 31 comments WRAP-UP

I had a decent month of reading. I am scrambling to finish renovating a house before the fall, so all of my books were listening, and many was the time when I had to pause to run a drill or a saw... so I fell a few books short of my goals, but I came close.

In Sci-Fi, I read:
Wayward (Wayward Pines #2) by Blake Crouch The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, #1) by Douglas Adams The Last Town (Wayward Pines, #3) by Blake Crouch Kindred by Octavia E. Butler We Are Legion (We Are Bob) (Bobiverse, #1) by Dennis E. Taylor For We Are Many (Bobiverse, #2) by Dennis E. Taylor Waking Gods (Themis Files, #2) by Sylvain Neuvel The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley All These Worlds (Bobiverse, #3) by Dennis E. Taylor

I also read a couple of Fantasies:
Fool Moon (The Dresden Files, #2) by Jim Butcher Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots

I nearly finished
Only Human (Themis Files, #3) by Sylvain Neuvel
last night, which would have wrapped up the series, but I fell asleep... I also started:
Goldilocks by Laura Lam
which has a great intro, and I am excited about it.

I thought my picks were a bit of a mixed bag. The Wayward Pines series is very well paced, but it devolves into a bit of a rooster squabble over a woman in the third book that is embarrassingly juvenile. I really didn't like The Stars Are Legion, which is frustrating, as I am always excited to see lgbtq Sci-Fi, but it just wasn't well structured or developed. The Bobiverse trilogy was probably the most fun. It's pretty fluffy and trope-laden, but Taylor really does a nice job fleshing out traditional Sci-Fi concepts, and he does some subtle exploration of AI mental health.

Tawallah Wrap Up

I was hoping to read more science fiction but I read as widely as usual.

Here are the science fiction books I read:
Morning Star (Red Rising Saga, #3) by Pierce Brown Buffalo Soldier by Maurice Broaddus
Still reading these: Autonomous by Annalee Newitz Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton

Book with science fiction elements
Naked in Death (In Death #1) by J.D. Robb Radio Silence by Alice Oseman

Fantasy
Theft of Swords (The Riyria Revelations, #1-2) by Michael J. Sullivan The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water by Zen Cho Deathless Divide (Dread Nation, #2) by Justina Ireland Rise of Empire (The Riyria Revelations, #3-4) by Michael J. Sullivan

Other
The Vanishing Girls by Callie Browning Here Comes the Sun by Nicole Y. Dennis-Benn In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline

Overall I enjoyed or am enjoying the science fiction I read. I realized that I seem to quite enjoy AI/bots/cyborg tropes. I wish I had gotten to Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir which has been getting all the love recently.

I am now more excited to focus a bit more on science fiction for the rest of the year.
