So, I don't love Lemire's writing. Most of his writing to me is decent. I've read Descender, and enjoyed it enough to buy both HCs. Read Animal Man, some of the X-Men stuff.
Minor spoilers ahead for Black Hammer:
I also read Black Hammer, main series only. I loved the first HC. This mystery of where they were, but more importantly the relationships between the characters really drew me in. The second book turns 180 degrees. While on one hand the direction it went can be thought provoking and is very similar in theme to Morrison's Multiversity, it sort of destroyed the "specialness" of the first book for me. Enough that I didn't want to read any more about that universe.

I just finished reading the second half of Black Hammer for the first time. I felt like the first third was top notch and I was ok with the mystery reveal/finish. Overall I'd say I liked it.
Descender is probably my favorite thing by Lemire (haven't read Essex County). Lemire in Sweet Tooth captured innocence better than anyone else I've seen capture that note in a graphic novel.

Black Hammer I borrowed vol 1 from local library, read about 30 pages, liked it enough to buy my own. Plan to start to read when receiving World of Black Hammer vol 2, or maybe after World vol 3 is out.
Lemire is one of my more favorite writers today, but often I feel his stories aren’t always thought through. Trillium was a let down for me. Underwater Welder I truly enjoyed; I think I wrote a review for that one.
I pair/compact him with Kindt because I discovered them both around the same time. Kindt is by far better IMO but I’m really looking forward to their team up on cosmic detective.

I like Lemire but I find I don't reread him very often, he's very melancholic, and I've sold off many of his books, including Sweet Tooth and Descender, because I just wasn't into Dustin Nyugen's artwork. I own Trillium and AD After Death (which he illustrated), both I really enjoyed and have reread because they're more sci-fi. I liked Royal City and loved Essex County. I've been eyeing Animal Man for a while, read the first volume, it's pretty dark.

"melancholic" is an excellent word to describe his indie work!
I'll be curious to hear what you think of Vol. 2 of Black Hammer.

I think hes just not really a writer I have been able to enjoy.
