It's June, which means Pride month for most of the world. Pride is a celebration and commemoration of the start of a worldwide movement to increase visibility, acceptance and ensure legal protections for the LGBTQ+ community.
The first marches were held as a commemoration to mark the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots in New York City in 1969. They were also a protest against the ill and unfair treatment of the gay community at large.
Huge strides have since been made in the advancements of basic human rights and protections from discrimination for the LGBTQ+ community world wide. Shockingly, there is still a long way to go as many countries' governments still consider who one loves (in every sense of the word) to be their business. There are 71 countries or jurisdictions that criminalise adult, consensual, same-sex relationships. Eleven of these consider it worthy of the death pentalty. Iran, Northern Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen have given the death penalty for homosexual relations and the death penalty is a legal possibility in Afghanistan, Brunei, Mauritania, Pakistan, Qatar and UAE.
It saddens me that people are filled with such hate, fear or loathing for something that they need to not only deny basic human rights but kill someone for their sexual orientation. Luckily, we can't stuff the genie back in the bottle. They are out and they are proud. So this June read along in celebration, commemoration and activism.
This is a good article about the "mother" of Pride. Please note that it will take you outside of Goodreads. https://www.advocate.com/bisexuality/...
