I can tell you all that this is a very good book. Lots of plot twists :D

Elisabeth (the_world_through_catholiceyes) Weeel I actually don't like it very much. It is such a dark book, at least that is my impression. I never liked it very much though I have read it several times.

Isabel (promise-of-god) I have never read this but want to someday. I've heard from some that it is a great book and from others that it wasn't very enjoyable. :|

Rose, I've a quick question.
So this is the book that was selected to read in the month of June. Unfortunately, I don't have the book. But reading it is an optional thing for every member, correct?

Elisabeth (the_world_through_catholiceyes) You can listen to a dramatic audiobook reading on librivox and you can read it online.

Yea I would agree that it is dark. (gothic romance)
As much as I like it, I'm not a big fan of the relationship between the two main characters.

Carina Shephard (carinashephard) I've read Jane Eyre before, but it's been long enough that I remember absolutely nothing about it... so I'm looking forward to reading it this month!

Leah Here are your book questions! Beware if you have not finished it yet, there are some spoilers ahead. (;
.
.
.
.

1. If Jane had chosen to marry St. John Rivers, would she have found happiness? Do you think he or her could have grown close overtime or not?

2. If you were able to play a character in this book as an adapted movie/play, who would you want to be cast as?

3. As it is classified “gothic romance” could you spot any gothic elements/themes/descriptions in the story?

4. What would you have done differently if you were Jane and had to make the same decisions as Jane?

5. What do you think of Edward Rochester? Did your opinion of him change after learning of his wife?

Elisabeth (the_world_through_catholiceyes) (Note I haven't read it in a couple years but I know it quite well.)
1. I don't think so. John Rivers is very selfish. He seems to be completly occupied with God, but really he is completly occupied with his false idea of God
2. Oh certainly one of the Rivers Sisters. They are by far the nicest and least gloomy characters in the whole book.
3. I would say the bit about the insane wife, Mr Rochester, and all the secret about the insane wife is very Gothic.
4. I wouldn't have fallen in love with Mr Rochester.
5. Nope. I hated him before and after. He is so horribly Byronic, and I hate Byronic heroes.

Elisabeth (the_world_through_catholiceyes) (Just looking over my answers I realized most of them add up to "I hate Mr Rochester:-))

Elizabeth | 50 comments 1. No I don't think so, he would have not have loved her however much they worked together and lived together its not in his nature.

2. oooh this one is good. I would like to play Jane, honestly she is a bit bland but still the main character of a good classic.

3. I might be so wrong about this lol, but I would have to say the lone house in countryside, the mad wife and the dark brooding husband who falls in love with a teacher.

4. What I would do different from Jane, probably would be... I don't know . I actually would do most of what she did, I admire a lot of her decision's.

5. Meh kind of. I liked how he cared for her at the end but at the climax when you find out he lied to her and asked to still stay with him,not at all.

message 17: by Leah (new) - rated it 5 stars

Leah 1. No, he was way too focused on what his goals and ambitions were to the point that he didn't consider other's desires. And he was really closed off from people.
What I noticed between Jane and Rochester was a deep sharing and emotional attachment that seems almost necessary for Jane to have with someone. (Possibly because of her childhood's lack of affection.) and John doesn't give her that.

2. To be honest.......... I think being the crazy wife in the attic would be fun because of the ragged costume and haggard hair and makeup + a challenging acting practice. XD

3. How the red room was described when she was a child was very dramatic and artistic.

4. If I were Jane and shared the same affections for Mr. Rochester... (I sooo don't lol) I would probably put out a notice for a new Job as soon as I started to fall for him. How could he love a lowly governess such as myself? I shall try to spare myself the heartache..

5. Hahaha Not much. I disliked him throughout the book.... He was moody, and rude, and he kept playing with Jane's heart making things confusing for her. Also the age gap is kinda, sorta, a lot creepy.... (20 years older) He could have been worse though... He was sweet if he wanted to be. He also talked to Jane like she was a academic equal which was good. But in general, he rubs me the wrong way.
