Ellen | 3574 comments An American war correspondent, Catherine Saxon, is found murdered in her London apartment and Scotland Yard, along with the Secret Service, are tasked with the investigation. Maisie Dobbs has been selected by the Yard to assist and she is aided by an old acquaintance, Mark Scott, a man with whom she has a volatile relationship. As the bombs continue to drop on London during the 1940 German blitzkrieg, Maisie finds herself juggling several aspects of her life: a possible new romance, the ardent desire to adopt the rescued evacuee Anna, and the nearly tragic accident in which her best friend was nearly killed. Maisie interrogates many suspects during her investigation but the true killer seems to elude her at every turn.

I love this series so much and the character of Maisie Dobbs. What a steadfast, heroic character she has become over the course of these books. On a side note I have to rave about the performer of the audio version I listened to: Orlagh Cassidy. I have been impressed by other narrators but she is amazing. At one point she held a lengthy 3-way conversation between the very British Maisie, the American Mark Scott and a Scotsman Robbie MacFarlane. Wow - mind blown! Excellent job.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11286 comments I really like Maisie Dobbs too, though I'm way behind you if you're up to 1940.

I agree about Orlagh Cassidy. She reads some of the Baldacci books (which I seem to have moved away from.) I love when I'm reading a book and I "forget" that one narrator is voicing all the different characters.
