I plan to read Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey and Lady Susan. For the contemporary novel challenge I plan to read Jane Austen at Home by Lucy Worsley and the Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow.
They are the only novels by Jane Austen I didn't get a chance to read. Looking forward to watching the BBC adaption of Pride and Prejudice and the Emma 2020 movie.
I will also join the readalong for Persuasion.
I am really excited about this year's Jane Austen in July reading challenge.

message 8: by Liz (new)

Liz | 5 comments I plan to join the read along of Mansfield Park. After that, I’ve got 4 “retelling” so I’ll I’ll see how many I get to - Longbourn by Jo Baker, Jane in Love by Rachel Givny, The Other Bennett Sister by Janice Hadlow and Ladies of the House by Lauren Edmondson.
I definitely won’t get to all the prompts but maybe a rewatch of the BBC Pride and Prejudice min series and Bridget Jones’s Diary.

message 10: by TRP (new)

TRP Watson (trpw) | 6 comments Initial TBR
1. Mansfield Park - I haven't read this one enough
2. Jane Austen's Letters A fairly complete edition of her letters edited by Deidre Le Faye
3. What Matters in Jane Austen?: Twenty Crucial Puzzles Solved by John Mullan
4. The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet by Colleen McCullough author of the 1970s smash hit novel The Thornbirds
5. Castle Rackrent by Maria Edgeworth
6. 1980 BBC TV adaptation of Pride and Prejudice by Fay Weldon. I'm a bit too obsessed by this. It's a good version and closer to the book that the 1995 adaptation (although 1995 is better TV and has a sexy Darcy). Weldon's experience of writing the adaptation inspired her to write an epistolary memoir of Jane Austen called Letters to Alice: On First Reading Jane Austen
7. Gurinder Chadha's Bride and Prejudice

message 12: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 16 comments I'm feeling pretty good about this TBR. Now to get through the 3 books I'm currently reading before July starts!

1.  Readalong Mansfield Park & Persuasion
2. Love and Friendship,  A History of England
3. Jane Austen at Home
4. Unmarriagable by Soniah Kamal--thank you Katie, for the recommendation! I've been trying to find books set outside of the US or England.
5. Lovers' vow
6. Persuasion(1995), Pride and Prejudice(2005), Mansfield Park (1999). I've never seen a Mansfield Park adaptation, and I'm curious. If I can easily find a BBC version of any of the 6, hopefully I'll watch that, too.
7. YouTube series: "Elinor and Marianne take Barton"  "From Mansfield with Love".

message 13: by Lucy (new)

Lucy (bookishyarn) | 3 comments Tentatively TBR

1. Persuasion
2. Sanditon

4. Persuading Austen
5. Helen
6. Maybe Pride and Prejudice. Depends what I can find on Netflix/Prime
7. Austenland/Jane Austen Book Club

message 14: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1 comments I've been saving What Kitty Did Next for this! I am finishing up Jane Austen at Home so I am thinking about reading The Courtiers: Splendor and Intrigue in the Georgian Court at Kensington Palace because I love Lucy Worsley. This also might be the year I finally get to Longbourn as well!

salainenkirjahylly I'm "only" going to read Mansfield Park and Persuasion, since I'm taking part in an other reading challenge at the same time. Otherwise I have Emma, Pride and prejudice and Sence ans sensibility in my tbr waiting..

message 21: by Lorri (last edited Jun 14, 2021 05:43PM) (new)

Lorri | 105 comments My plans to meet the Jane Austen July challenges exploring the Gothic:

1. JA novel: Northanger Abbey (NA) satirizes the Gothic
2. Other JA work: I plan to read some of her juvenilia
3. Nonfiction: What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew: From Fox Hunting to Whist-the Facts of Daily Life in Nineteenth-Century England Daniel Pool
4. JA retelling: instead, I will rewatch Death Comes to Pemberley then, if I have access, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies because they are video retellings that fit my gothic theme
5. JA’s contemporary: I plan to finish the last 2 of the 9 horrid novels mentioned in NA and published as The Complete Northanger Horrid Novel Collection: The Mysterious Warning, A German Tale by Eliza Parsons and The Italian by Mrs. Ann Radcliffe
6. Re-watch the 1986 and 2007 direct adaptations of NA
7. Re-watch Lost in Austen, a modern screen adaptation of PP that humorously explores what happens when a heroine blurs the intersections of literature and reality as happens in NA

*Earlier this year, I read the other 5 horrid novels mentioned in NA: The Mysteries of Udolpho by Mrs. Radcliffe, The Castle of Wolfenbach by Eliza Parsons, The Necromancer; or, the Tale of the Black Forest by Ludwig Flammenberg, The Midnight Bell by Francis Lathom, and Clermont, A Tale by Regina Maria Roche. I plan to read 2 more in June: Horrid Mysteries of the Marquis de Grosse by Karl Grosse, and Orphan of the Rhine by Eleanor Sleath.

message 22: by Meriyou (new)

Meriyou | 41 comments I think I will focus on trying to follow the Mansfield Park readalong, and for a contemporary (more or less) I will read Lover's Vows. To continue with the theme, I may rewatch every adaptation of this novel (Youtube versions included).
If I have time I could reread some Juvenilia and part II of The Madwoman in the Attic, but that may be too much.

message 23: by Mayra (new)

Mayra | 5 comments 1. Mansfield Park and maybe Emma
2. Lady Susan
3. Don't know yet.
4. The Other Bennet Sister
5. The Mangy Parrot, Abridged
6. 1994 Pride & Prejudice
7. Clueless

message 24: by Anja (new)

Anja (pippimonster) | 10 comments I'm hoping to participate in one of the two readalongs--there is an audiobook of MP narrated by Pippa Bennett-Warner I am particularly interested in (she was excellent narrating some of Zadie Smith's books).
I'm also planning to read Sanditon, Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Miss Austen by Gill Hornby, and either Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos or Justine by Marquis de Sade.

message 25: by Kathy (last edited Jun 18, 2021 01:37PM) (new)

Kathy | 42 comments My tentative plans:

1. JA Novel:
I'll be (re-)reading Northanger Abbey. This is the Belknap Annotated edition--although NA is a re-read for me, I haven't read this annotated edition before. I plan to read the annotations (by Susan J. Wolfson) while I'm listening to the audio read by Juliet Stevenson

2. Not a main novel:
I'll be listening to Lady Susan on audiobook, which is also a re-read.

3. Non-fiction work about Jane Austen or her time:
My selection is Jane Austen: The World of Her Novels by Deirdre Le Faye

4. Read a retelling of a Jane Austen book
Ladies of the House: A Modern Retelling of Sense and Sensibility by Lauren Edmondson--I may read this ahead of time in June.
Although not a true continuation of a novel, I may read Miss Austen by Gill Hornby, too.

5. Read a book by a contemporary of Jane Austen
Probably Evelina by Fanny Burney--it will go well with Northanger Abbey, as some of her works are mentioned in NA.

6. Direct screen adaptation:
Definitely time for a re-watch of 1995 P&P; I may watch Love & Friendship, too.

7. Modern screen adaptation:
Probably Bridget Jones's Diary--haven't watched that in a long time.

Looking forward to a lovely JA July!

Michael Dennis | 46 comments My perhaps overly ambitious plan

Jane Austen novel

I plan to read all 6. I’ve read three before. Will see if this is doable or not.

Jane Austen non-novel
I have a collection of Sandition other shorter works.

Jane Austen non fiction

What Matters in Jane Austen?: Twenty Crucial Puzzles Solved by John Mullan. I think one of the hosts mentioned in a YouTube video and it looks really interesting.

Retelling
I’m not sure. I may skip this one.

Contemporary of Austen
I have a book of short stories by ETA Hoffmann that I’ve been meaning to read because of a recommendation in a Great Courses lesson.

Direct screen adaptation

I really enjoy the miniseries of P&P.

Modern

Clueless

John Mullan's book is so good, but you'll get more out of it after you've read all 6 novels at least once.

message 28: by Helen (new)

Helen | 23 comments We'll see how much I get to but so far my plans are;

1) Re-read Persuasion
2) Watsons and maybe Love and Freindship
3) A Dance With Jane Austen: How A Novelist and Her Characters Went to the Ball by Susannah Fullerton
4) Miss Austen by Gill Hornby and The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk, it's more a Regency romance with magic but my loan is coming due soon
5) Rob Roy by Sir Walter Scott, it came out in 1817 the year Austen died
6) Not sure which adaptation yet, might try and find the 90s Persuasion one if possible
7) Again not sure, I plan on watching Kate's recommendation video again and see what sounds good.

message 29: by Linda (new)

Linda Martin (lindajm) I don't expect to add five books to my TBR but want to do prompts 1 and 2 plus the screen adaptions. I have other challenges I'm working on and so... two Jane Austen books will be enough for me.

1. Read one of Jane Austen’s six novels - Mansfield Park
2. Read something by Jane Austen that is not one of her main six novels - Letters of Jane Austen
3. Read a non-fiction work about Jane Austen or her time - no
4. Read a retelling of a Jane Austen book - no
5. Read a book by a contemporary of Jane Austen - no
6. Watch a direct screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book - TBA
7. Watch a modern screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book - TBA

message 30: by Eloise (last edited Jul 01, 2021 03:04AM) (new)

Eloise (elcrivain) 1. Read one of Jane Austen’s six novels. I'll definitely join the Mansfield Park read-along because I would love to reread it next. I'll skip the Persuasion read-along tho because I am currently rereading it at the moment.

2. Read something by Jane Austen that is not one of her main six novels. I'll be rereading Sanditon for the first time! I was not too fond of it before but I hope it'll change the second time around.

3. Read a non-fiction work about Jane Austen or her time. For this category, I am planning on reading more than one work but I'll surely read The Real Jane Austen: A Life in Small Things firstly.

4. Read a retelling of a Jane Austen book. I've decided to read a modern retelling of Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld. I haven't read any of The Austen Project books so this will be the first one I will be reading.

5. Read a book by a contemporary of Jane Austen. The first book that came to mind is The Giaour: A Fragment of a Turkish Tale by Lord Byron, published in 1813. This work was mentioned in Persuasion.

6. Watch a direct screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book. I would love to have a rewatch of the 2005 movie adaptation of Pride & Prejudice directed by Joe Wright.

7. Watch a modern screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book. I would probably rewatch Bridget Jones's Diary directed by Sharon Maguire, but I'm actually not quite sure yet. Kind of not in the mood of watching it but I might do it either way, haha.

message 31: by Liz (new)

Liz Little | 55 comments I plan to join the readalong, read Lady Susan, Elegant Etiquette in the Nineteenth Century, The Other Bennet Sister, and Evelina. I will probably watch all of the movie adaptations of her books (at least the versions I own) and I think I will watch Modern Persuasion along with all the other movies based on her books that I own.

message 32: by Kathy (last edited Jul 04, 2021 11:31AM) (new)

Kathy | 2 comments Though I am probably being much too ambitious, here are my JAJ TBR plans:
1 I plan to join both RALs, probably listening to MP on audio and reading my new paper copy of Persuasion.
2. I haven't yet read The Watsons or Sandition, so I'm hoping to do both.
3. I bought Eavesdropping on Jane Austen's England, but I might not read the whole thing in July.
4 I'm going for Unequal Affections for this one. -see note
5. Like so many, I plan to read Lover's Vows to shed more light on MP.
6 I am still not sure. I have disliked all the post-2000 versions I've seen because jarring modernizations of the social code *=(e.g. unrestricted smooching, and that horrible scene when Ann Elliot gallops down the street chasing Captain Wentworth - Ugh!). If anyone can recommend one that is more reflective of the rules of the society of the time, please let me know. Otherwise I'll watch my copy of the '95 Persuasion. Lovely.
7. If I can find a way to get it, I'd love to check out the web series From Mansfield with Love. (I see it's on YT.)

Note - Though I had said I would read Unequal Affections for Challenge 4 I've decided to take the side track and read Miss Austen.

message 33: by Tasha (new)

Tasha | 6 comments Really looking forward to Jane Austen July, although not sure I'll get around to everything on my TBR...

1. Mansfield Park, will join the read-along
2. The Watsons and Sanditon. Might also read some of Jane Austen's letters.
3. The Real Jane Austen: A Life in Small Things
4. Miss Austen
Technically about Cassandra Austen, but I've been meaning to read this one for a while now
The Other Bennet Sister
Sanditon, completed by Juliette Shapiro
5. Evelina
6. Looking forward to rewatching the BBC's Pride and Prejudice, alongside,
7. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.
also From Mansfield with Love. Never watched this before but curious following Katie's recommendation.
Is it July yet?

message 36: by Chelsea (last edited Jun 22, 2021 08:47AM) (new)

Chelsea (voyageofatimewanderer) | 11 comments I just posted my TBR video on my booktube channel
(Click here if you want to watch it!), but the gist of my reading plans are below...

1. Read one of Jane Austen’s six novels.
I am definitely going to read “Northanger Abbey” because I wanted to read it last year but didn't get around to it. I'm also very tempted to join in the group read of “Persuasion”.

2. Read something by Jane Austen that is not one of her main six novels.
This year I'm going to be reading “Sanditon” for this challenge, and I'm quite excited about it!

3. Read a non-fiction work about Jane Austen or her time.
I have the audiobook of “Jane Austen at Home” on hold at my library, so planning on that for my non-fiction pick.

4. Read a retelling of a Jane Austen book.
Finally going to read “The Other Bennet Sister” after hearing SO many good things about it from everyone it seems!

5. Read a book by a contemporary of Jane Austen.
I am planning to read a poetry collection: “Lyrical Ballads” by William Wordsworth. Hoping I will have better luck with this than I have with some of the novels by her contemporaries from the time period that I have tried in previous Julys and not gotten along with so well.

6. Watch a direct screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book.
After finishing Sanditon, I want to start the new miniseries adaptation of it and see if it lives up to the hype! I will also probably rewatch P&P or Emma as I always seem wont to do in July!

7. Watch a modern screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book.
Bridget Jones Diary and the sequels... I have only seen the movie once years ago and am curious to watch the more recent sequel films.

I also have two other Jane-adjacent books that I am hoping to get to over the month of July: “The Jane Austen Society” by Natalie Jenner and “Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict” by Laurie Viera Rigler.

magrathea. (iamthelobster) 1. Read one of Jane Austen’s six novels
I'd like to read both Mansfield Park & Persuasion. Definitely will read MP, because it's the only one I haven't read so far, so I'll start with it and see how it goes from there.

2. Read something by Jane Austen that is not one of her main six novels
Sanditon and other stories

3. Read a non-fiction work about Jane Austen or her time
Jane Austen at Home

4. Read a retelling of a Jane Austen book
I don't really like retellings, but I'll give Death Comes to Pemberley a shot.

5. Read a book by a contemporary of Jane Austen
The Monk is sitting on my shelf for quite a long time now.

6. Watch a direct screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book
I haven't seen Mansfield Park (1999). But I'd like to rewatch Northanger Abbey (2007) as well.

7. Watch a modern screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book
I'll think about it. I'll probably just rewatch Clueless if I don't find anything else.

1. Mansfield Park and Persuasion (I have never read Mansfield Park and have only read Persuasion once.

2. Lady Susan

3. Can I choose a tea book with recipes and/or regency knitting for this? If so, then I choose Tea with Jane Austen: Recipes Inspired by Her Novels and Letters by Pen Vogler and The Best of Jane Austen Knits: 27 Regency-Inspired Designs by Amy Clarke Moore

4. Darcy Swipes Left by Courtney Carborne and/or That Can Be Arranged: A Muslim Love Story by Huda Fahmy

5. The Nose by Nikolai Gogol

6. Sense and Sensibility 1995 on Netflix

7. Bridget Jones's Diary on Netflix

message 44: by Kathy (new)

Kathy | 42 comments Has anyone read Old Friends and New Fancies by Sybil Brinton? It was written in 1913, and the cover says it was the first Austen sequel written. I read it about 10 years ago. It includes characters from all 6 of the novels. I enjoyed the humor, although it seemed a bit scattered, with so many characters.

Just wondering if anyone else has read this and whether they liked it.

message 45: by Erin (new)

Erin Shelley (ekshelley) | 10 comments For this year's reading:
1. I only have Emma and Mansfield Park as first reads. All year I had planned on Emma, but with the Mansfield Park read-along, I'm not sure now. I think I'll decide in July.
2. Lady Susan
3. The Genius of Jane Austen: Her Love of Theatre and Why She Works in Hollywood by Paula Byrne
4. The Other Bennett Sister by Janice Hadlow
5. William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge's "Lyrical Ballads" published in 1798, or the 1800 version that includes more poems.
6. Persuasion (1995)- this is a rewatch and is the film that always makes me happy when I see Ciaran Hinds in other films.
7. Bride and Prejudice (2004) or Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)

Alina Cuartas de Marchena | 4 comments This is what I am considering at the moment.

1. Read one of Jane Austen’s six novels: Northanger Abbey
2. Read something by Jane Austen that is not one of her main six novels : Lady Susan
3. Read a non-fiction work about Jane Austen or her time: "The Real Jane Austen" by Paula Bryne or "Georgian London" by Lucy Inglis
4. Read a retelling of a Jane Austen book : "Where the Rhytm Takes You by Sarah Dass (retelling of Persuasion based on the Caribbean Island of Tobago).
5. Read a book by a contemporary of Jane Austen: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley or A Sicilian Romance by Ann Radcliffe
6. Watch a direct screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book: Probably Emma the 2020 version
7. Watch a modern screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book: Maybe Bridget Jones Diary
