Jen K | 3198 comments The story is bleak but the writing is beautiful with lovely phrases and images even if of terrible things. Abdel Latif is from the rebel area near Aleppo, Syria and lived in a rebel stronghold outside of Damascus holding out as long as he could, living a second life with his first crush. Eventually the revolutionaries bring him to one of his sons, Bolbol, to live out his final days. His dying wish is to be buried back in his home village next to his sister.

Bolbol calls in his estranged brother and sister and they set forth on this grand mission in his brother's minibus braving countless checkpoints with extremists of both sides, snipers, bombs and countless other horrors in war torn Syria with their father's quickly decaying corpse.

The part made the most of the absurd of the journey and the multiple barriers keeping them from completing their task. Then the body and relationships deteriorate as they go on and it is a bit sad to see all the destruction inside the minibus while the world rages outside of the minibus.

Jen K | 3198 comments I think you might like it. It is quite well done but not uplifting at all. It is related to Faulkner's As I Lay Dying.
