Have you ever bought a book, you didn't originally plan on reading, because you somehow ended up at an authors signing?

OR would you read a book you hadn't originally thought of reading if you ended up at an authors signing and your friend bought you the signed book as a gift? (even though you had said millions of times NO you don't need to buy it for me as a gift)

David Freas (quillracer) | 2377 comments If a friend bought me a book (even though I asked them not to), I would read it. To me, not reading it would be sort of an insult, as if I was saying, "Your gift means nothing to me, isn't worth my time."

Arlene | 16 comments Hi David, I'm going in the opposite direction right now. I am a little tired to people trying to get me to read and gift a book that I have said a hundred times, not my style and I am not a fan of the author.

I do not want to insult the friend but the friend is insulting me by trying to force my hand and not hearing what I am telling them.

This has been a recent problem so I am a little testy about this. :)

David Freas (quillracer) | 2377 comments After multiple 'No thank you's, I don't blame you for being testy. I was mainly referring to one-shot deals.

My family mainly buys me books for holidays and birthdays and they know generally not to buy me books not on my list. Although sometimes they get me one that really captures my attention.

I agree with you both (if that's possible :) )

I wasn't with my mother when she went to a book signing and for some reason bought a book and had it signed for me. I've never read it but might some day.

Do you re-read your books or give them away after you've read them?

Julesy Hmmm, interesting question. I have not attended too many author signings. The last one I did attend was with multiple authors. I did buy one particular author's book because that was the reason for me attending the book signing. I did pay too much (full price hardcover) when I could have gotten it for much less at Barnes & Noble.

So I guess my answer would be ... I wouldn't go to an author signing unless it was an author I love, hence wouldn't end up with a book I wouldn't read.

I hope authors will get back to visiting book stores soon. I miss visiting book stores.

Sheri, with all the scads of new books coming at me every week, unfortunately there’s no time for a re-read.
The ‘must-read’ ones are passed onto friends with similar reading tastes. The rest get sent to the local hospital.

Jamie Barringer (Ravenmount) (ravenmount) I've never seen the point of autographed books, so if I was at a book signing it would really be accidental or I'd be there to meet the author. If a friend gives me a book, in any context, I'll at least put it in my stacks, and probably read it, but it will probably wind up on a free-books shelf or little free library afterwards, unless it is REALLY worth rereading.
