Read over 10 years ago, I believe the story is much older. Takes place over 100 years ago. Two women are helping a neighbor whose husband just died. Over the course of the story, and very subtly, it becomes apparent that the husband was abusive, there were no kids, the wife had a pet bird that she doted on, the husband killed the bird out of spite, the wife killed the husband. And the neighbors were not going to turn her in. It was an awesome piece of writing. As I recall, not a famous NE author either. I found it in a collection of New England short stories, may have been on audiobook.
