Linda C (libladynylindac) | 1804 comments While walking in NYC Laura Schroff is approached by an 11 year-old pan-handler asking for change because he is hungry. She passes by but something stops her in the middle of the street and causes her to return and offer to take the boy for lunch. So begins a friendship that crosses age, gender, race and background to endure for more than 30 years. After their first meeting and a second they begin to meet every Monday for a meal and talk. The story is told chronologically giving background on each character and disclosing information each didn't know at the time but learned later. This worked because it gave a more complete feel to the story.

Since this was published the authors adapted the story for youth and wrote a spin-off picture book based on an incident in the book. Part the profits from the book go to the No Kid Hungry organization.

Booknblues | 12216 comments Your review makes people want to read this. It is a good story and I read this a few years ago and enjoyed it but not quite as much as you. I gave it 3 stars.

Susan Lewallen (susanlewallen) | 803 comments I rounded this up to a 4 myself. Some aspects of the book could have used a bit more explaining, but Maurice’s resilience, decency, and willingness to trust were very impressive.
