Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2603 comments I really enjoyed this audio book. The narrator was very good and brought the character very much to life. Especially Emmie but, oh my goodness, she did the very forceful and loud Mrs Bird quite well.

Emmie Lord has dreams of becoming a journalist. In particular a war journalist. The place and time period of this novel is London in the beginning of World War II and the Germans are beginning to bomb London. Emmie works for the fire brigade on the telephones. She is well liked by most everyone on the brigade include the men who go out to the fires usually started by the bombs. Emmie also has a paying job but would very much prefer to work for a paper. She sees and ad for a "junior" and it seems her dream will come true. Unfortunately the job isn't what she thought it was.

Emmie has a very good friend Bunty, that she shares a free apartment with - as Bunty's grandmother owns the lower part of the home.

The book has some humor but it doesn't treat lightly the difficulties of living in London during the bombing raids. In fact, I think that it does a very good job of showing how life can go on in very difficult circumstance. It certainly showed the stereotypical British "stiff upper lip" and the attitude of "Keep Calm and Carry On" that we see bastardized everywhere lately. It was a very real thing.

Well done story, very believable with excellent scenes and atmosphere.
