Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 2030 comments Details:
*There are 13 'Weeks' to the game.
*The game begins on Wednesday, July 14 at 12:01 a.m. (Pacific Daylight Time)
*The game concludes Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 12:59 p.m. (Pacific Daylight Time)
*If your profile is set to private, you will need to open it for the duration of the game. You may need to be contacted by the head of your team.

How to Play
* Each team member must read one book each week.
* All four tasks must be completed from each week's list.
* You may not start reading your book before Wednesday morning and
you must finish reading your book by Tuesday night (midnight).

* Each week's tasks will be posted Monday mornings.
* The fifth member of each team can choose to read a book for any task they'd like.

Rules:
* Re-reads are allowed.
* Graphic novels are allowed, but they must be 250+ pages.
* No cookbooks or poetry books.
* Books must be at least 140 pages. Audio book page length is determined by the first paper version.
* For cover items, the item must be obvious and distinct.
* For cover color, the color must be at least 50% (check with TinEye)
* For location, the MC must be in the country or city at least 50% of the time.

Points
Each task will receive 5 points, which means teams can earn 20 points each week. Also, I will randomly select 1 task to receive an extra 5 points. If the fifth member (or DDBR) reads for that task, the team will earn 25 points for that week.
The team with the most points at the end of the race wins.

DDBR and Missing Players:
If a team has fewer assigned members than five at the beginning of the game, one member may read an extra book to make up the difference. That member is the Designated Double Book Reader (DDBR). The DDBR may change from week to week.

If a team member has an emergency or has scheduled an absence, a DDBR can read 2 books that week so that the team will not lose points. There is no consequence for this absence.

A team member can have one unplanned absence without repercussions. When they miss a second week, they will eliminated from the team. A DDBR will NOT be used in this circumstance. A replacement will hopefully be found.

Captain's Duties:
* Captains will need to begin a thread for their team. Members will get to know each other, talk, discuss tasks assignments, and report books there.
* Double check your team members' Completion Posts to verify compliance to the rules and tasks.
* Captains will need to report (on the Reporting Thread that I will make) when everyone in their team has posted a Completion Post. That entails one post with a copy of or link to each member's Completion Post.
*Report any problems, concerns, missing players, etc. to the Amazing Race Host (aka, the moderator).

Starts: Wednesday, September 1 at 12:01 a.m. (your local time)
Ends: Tuesday, September 7 at 11:59 p.m. (your local time)

The teams start off at the Taj Mahal and must find the next route marker, located somewhere on the grounds of the palace. Frank and Margarita are the first to leave because of their fast forward pass from the last leg.

Frank and Margarita are the first to find the route marker and need to find a yellow and white flag at the Palace of the Winds in Jaipur. They must either take a taxi or a bus.

Teams have to find a holy man by either riding an elephant up a hill or going by boat. Once they retrieve the clue from the holy man, they must head to Karni Mata Temple, a place where rats are considered sacred. One team member must walk though the temple of rats to retrieve the next clue. Margarita, Brennan, Kevin and Emily perform this task. (see the Karni Mata Temple below)
description

From there they head to the pit stop at a hotel. Joe/Bill and Nancy/Emily arrive a few minutes apart. Nancy and Emily are the last to arrive. This is the second of three non-elimination points in the race, so no one is eliminated.

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 2030 comments Episode 9 - The Unexpected Twist completed

Starts: Wednesday, September 8 at 12:01 a.m. (your local time)
Ends: Tuesday, September 14at 11:59 p.m. (your local time)

The five remaining teams must get to the Temple of Dawn in Bangkok, using the train or a bus. Kevin and Drew are the first to leave.

Only two teams are eligible to use the Fast Forward: Nancy/Emily and Joe/Bill. The Fast Forward is at the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. (see below)
description
The two teams going for it must perform an old tradition in which they must drop the exact amount of coins into 108 slots. The problem is they have to choose the coins from a series of small trays, either being too many, too few or the right amount.

When the teams get to the next destination, they get a Roadblock. In this particular Roadblock, one team member must walk through a pit of hand-raised tigers to receive the next clue.

Joe/Bill, having received the Fast Forward, assume they have some time to kill and spend the night at the hotel. However, they are the last team to arrive at the pit stop. Nancy/Emily received a 24 hour time penalty for skipping the Detour and are eliminated.

This week's tasks are:
Location: read a book set in Thailand
Transportation: read a book where the MC travels by bus or train
Mission: drop the exact amount of coins into 108 slots - read a book with any number of 108 as the last number of the page count (examples: 261, 338, 420; must be the edition you read)

Ends: Tuesday, September 21 at 11:59 p.m. (your local time)

The teams begin this leg at the Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi.

The first clue directs the teams to Raile Beach in which they must find "the king". The teams discover that "the king" is a large rock formation and that they must go rock climbing or they can take an extremely long hike, as part of a Detour. All of the teams chose to go rock climbing.
description
After rock climbing, the teams must find their way to a boat rental company in Bor Tor, Ao Luk. Teams had to hire a boat at Ao Nang Beach and find a route marker bobbing in the water 4 miles (6.4 km) from the mainland near Chicken Island, where they had to use the snorkel gear to dive in the water to get their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to paddle a kayak with their team member and all their luggage down the river in search of a route marker flag. Once the flag was spotted, they had to climb into a nearby cave to get their next clue.

Starts: Wednesday, September 29 at 12:01 a.m. (your local time)
Ends: Tuesday, October 5 at 11:59 p.m. (your local time)

At the start of the leg in Beijing, teams had to use a map to find three kite flyers in Tiantan Park with their next clue. Once they obtained it, teams were then instructed to go to the Great Wall of China to find their next clue.

The Detour at the famous Great Wall of China was a choice between Flat or Steep. In Flat, teams had to walk to a long, flat path to a far away marked pavilion to their next clue. In Steep, teams had to take a much shorter, but extremely steep path to the closer marked pavilion to their next clue. All the teams chose the steep steps. At the top of the Great Wall, there is a clue.

They find that their next destination is a bed and breakfast in Anchorage, Alaska.

The morning after arriving in Alaska, they participated in an old Alaskan ritual, called a "Blanket Toss". (see below)
description

The next clue involved them getting to a glacier, where in a Roadblock, one of them had to climb it.

After the Roadblock, teams had to reach highway Mile Marker 131 near Denali State Park, where they would abandon their vehicles and ride a snowmobile to a wilderness cabin.

Starts: Wednesday, October 6 at 12:01 a.m. (your local time)
Ends: Tuesday, October 12 at 11:59 p.m. (your local time)

The season's final Detour was a choice between Dog Power or Horsepower. In Dog Power, teams had to ride dog sleds 11 miles (18 km) to their next clue. In Horsepower, teams had to ride snowmobiles 30 miles (48 km) to their next clue.

In the final Roadblock, one team member had to strip down to their underwear or a bathing suit, plunge into the freezing waters, completely submerge their heads, and then retrieve their next clue.

From Alaska, the three teams travel back to the starting point in New York City where Frank and Margarita live. Rob and Brennan worry that this might give Frank and Margarita an advantage.

Once in New York City, the teams travel by taxi to Vincent Daniels Square along 51st and Roosevelt Avenue in Queens for their final clue.

At Vincent Daniels Square, teams had to take the 7 train from an elevated station to the Willets Point – Shea Stadium Station, then follow the flags to Flushing Meadows Park, the Finish Line of the inaugural Amazing Race.

Rob and Brennan are the first to cross the finish line. Frank and Margarita are the next team to arrive. Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 2030 comments Hi everyone!
Welcome and I'm looking forward for our adventure. I hope one of you is familiar with the show if not - we'll manage it together as well.

I'm based in Germany which means I'm usually 8 hours ahead and it's still early evening when each episode week starts/ends *YAY*

I'm the first time (ever) captain so I'll peak a lot in the other teams how to do it and ask Lanelle a lot of questions in the beginning but after seeing it in two other challenges think I'm up to the task.

I checked my books and could find something for each of the tasks:
Location: NYC is never an issue I have plenty of those and even one that fits this month's challenge
Transportation: One of the books I wanted start this week would fit here and for the Roadblock and I have no issue to wait until Wednesday to start it
Mission: I have plenty of those (I love suspense, thrillers and mysteries)
Roadblock: I have at least two books fitting here and if both don't work I can always fall back on something from the Miss Fortune series (and I love to re-read them as often as possible)

Meg (makeli2) | 1776 comments Hello, all: I'm happy to be on the team but unfortunately I won't be consistent for the next two weeks. I took my husband to the emergency room last night for pains and he's going to need bypass surgery on Monday, with a week or more of in-hospital recovery time. I'll check in when I can so if you want to assign me a task after next week I'll try hard to work on it. Thanks you all!!!

In the summer with some zones having daylight saving time and others not I'm not so sure about the time differences but it means basically you have to wait until at least 7 a.m. to start your book but have the following week around 7 hours more to finish it (if I got it correctly - luckily there're converters online to check it)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 2030 comments I know we'll have to read at some point books:
- where the main character must travel on an airplane, train, large boat/ship, truck, or subway
- main location: New York, France, Paris, any country that surrounds the Mediterranean Sea, NOT on Earth, Italy, India, Thailand, China, Alaska
If I find listopia list that list book for any of these, do you want me to post them for you as well? I thought if you'd be interested I'd use the last reserved message to post it all there and thought if you think of any books that are not on these lists I can add them there as well?

I'm not sure if the NOT on Earth will be something in space or rather sea/air travel.
@Maritza, do you remember from that season if there were any mentions of space related tasks in any form?

To me that reads as out in space, because the Med sea is already mentioned

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 2030 comments Emma wrote: "To me that reads as out in space, because the Med sea is already mentioned"

That was my first thought as well, though I started to think and can't immage a group challenge with 'general public' goint into space (exept a planetarium or something similar) so I thought set on a plane or at sea since I read the location Lanelle listed as any country bordering the sea so it would make even more sense but it could be as well that I'm overthinking it once again *grins*
Just in case I'll add the cruise themed books or any set primariliy at sea/in the air into my challenge folder.

Somehow I overlooked the truck as transportation while going over those the first time around and realised last night that's a rather tough one. As long as we don't need it more than once I'll have a book (luckily I'm behind with Mt. TBR for this year and didn't read this one yet) otherwise we have to hope one of you has something fitting here or we can use pick-up trucks as well.

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 2030 comments For this week I thought it would be only fair if Emma picks the task(s) she wants to read/has a book for first - she reads two books. If it's easier for you you can read both books for the same task.

Maritza is there a task you know you don't have a book for? Do you have a favorite?

Shan A do you have a favorite?

I can do any task that's left over as I have ideas for books in mind that (most likely) fit a task. If the one I'm not sure if it fits does not work, I'll still have enough time to re-read something that will fit for sure.

Emma | 169 comments Ok. I’m going for mission and roadblock. Does the weapon have to be a knife or can it be any weapon?

Shan ~A~ | 1246 comments I don't have a preference and I'm completely confused on why someone has to read more than 1 book. Can someone explain that to me?

Shan ~A~ | 1246 comments Never mind, I saw the info about Meg.

Meg, I hope everything turns out okay for you and your family.

As far as I understand the task any weapon works. Though if you're unsure you can double-check with Lanelle (or I can ask her if you prefer).

Do you have something for Transportation or do your prefer something different? I can take transportation - so no pressure.

It was only because in the task, it mentioned taking the path to ‘Knife’s Edge’ and I thought I’d maybe misconstrued the ‘any weapon’ because of such a specific reference. I’m just going to go with any weapon!

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 2030 comments So I'm going with the book I had first in mind Left Luggage (John Lawrence #1) by Andrew Christie Left Luggage by Andrew Christie because if I've seen it correctly it fitts every task but location. I've not decided yet which task I'll use.

Janine (Janeylou) and I had a short discussion about start and ending times.
To avoid confusion and stress, I'm changing a rule.

All times refer to your local time.

*The game begins on Wednesday, July 14 at 12:01 a.m. (your local time)
*The game concludes Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 12:59 p.m. (your local time)

Do not start reading your book before Wednesday morning (12:01 a.m. your time)
and
you must finish reading your book by Tuesday night (11:59 p.m. your time).

This is going to make a big difference for me- I’m time zonally challenged!

No worries, we'd help you but now it's no more necessary. YAY!

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 2030 comments I'm not sure if all of you keep tabs on the Q&A thread so I thought I bring this to you attention:

Lanelle wrote: "...As soon as the last team has posted on the Reporting thread, I'll reveal the task that receives the bonus points."

What do you think which of the four tasks will bring us additional points?

Since my book fits all but location I can change my mind which one to use it for until the day I report them back.
In my opinion Roadblock is the most difficult task though I'm not sure Lanelle will pick it for additional points (this time) and from previous challenges with her I'm aware I'm very bad at picking tasks that bring the most points - somehow I'm usually going for those with the least points :-( so I'd like your input on this one. And in case we decide the most likely is location I can always change my books (have plenty I want read and several of them are located in the state New York or NYC)

I noticed three of the teams named their team. Would you like to do it as well?

Meg is worried that with her husband's surgery and recovery process that she won't be able to participate in this challenge to the best of her ability. She didn't want to let her team down. Meg asked me to find a replacement for her.

So Steph will be joining your team.
