Suffer the Children question

Ok, I know John Saul? The last time I was in the bookstore the gentleman asked me “ is he still alive”. Yes, I have read most everything he wrote. I also enjoy Stephen King and absolutely love what I read from him. I get a little nervous with him because at times I feel like I read 100 pages that I didn’t need to. C.J. Box I like, oh, I loved Plum Island. I enjoy the horror, mystery genre. Does anyone have suggestions on an author to try. I don’t care much for romance or like a hundred characters. I am a nurse so medical is iffy. Loved Coma but never watched ER or Greys Anatomy . Jo Nesbo , The Snowman I thoroughly enjoyed. Would love to hear from you. Oh one more thing I prefer hardcovers.
