Hi Stephanie! The book and movie for September is The Martian. Rereading the post, I guess I did leave that crucial detail out. Thanks for pointing it out :)
Happy September!Welcome to Mars! But you are not alone here. Although it would be cool to be stranded with Matt Damon on a whole planet for a year and a half, right? But then you would have to make the food supply last for 2 people not just one. Potatoes anyone?
Could you do it?
I could not listen to disco music for that long, that is for sure!
Which did you like better? The film and the book had quite a few differences. Let's talk about them.
I have already picked the book/movie for October. Nothing graphic for those who have said that they don't like that type of thing.
Talk to you soon! :)
I finally finished the book today! I'll try to get ahold of the movie this weekend. I really enjoyed the book. The science went right over my head, lol, but the story was captivating and the funny bits had me laughing out loud. I especially loved when Mark emailed boobs to the whole country. Nice touch. 😂 I definitely couldn't have lived on potatoes that long. I love them now, but I think if I had to eat any one food and nothing else, I would quickly get sick of it.
Looking forward to the movie! I'll come back and post again after I see it.
I didn't think that understanding the science as a reader was really that important, just getting that it was really tough out there. Kinda like understanding all the science while watching Big Bang Theory on TV, did you have to understand everything Sheldon said to realize he was a bit loony? Not really. But figuring out how to survive and then get around on Mars, that is brilliance. All while watching old Three's Company episodes.I will look forward to hearing what you think about the film. Do you think it was an adequate representation?
I think they did a good job with the movie. Obviously they left a lot out, but they have to do that or it would be like 6 hours long, lol. I don’t know why they felt they had to change the end so that Lewis was the one who came out to get Mark. Shoulda seen it coming that he actually would do the “Iron Man” thing. Makes for exciting movie moments.I do wish they had his parents in it. I felt for them in the book, my kids are still little but I do understand being worried for them, I can’t imagine the worry if one of them were stranded on a barren planet all alone. Not vital to the main plot, and at least he did mention them when he asked Lewis to speak to them if he didn’t make it back, but at least one scene of worry and one of elation when he was saved would have been nice to see.
All in all, I enjoyed the movie, although I liked the book better. Not surprising, I like the book better about 99% of the time. 😇 What are your thoughts?
I also liked the book better. I thought his personality was shown better through that medium better, it was easier to see his sense of humor. In the film he might have come across as a bit stir crazy with his thoughts on old sitcoms and country music. I thought he was really funny.I also thought that in the film they should have shown they he had made contact with NASA much earlier and that he had help along the way to get rescued. It didn't have to be Just the Matt Damon show for the whole movie, in real life (if you can think of this as real) he would have had help.
I bought the next book by the same author as it is in production for a film as well. 2 members of my family have already finished it, and said that it was better than this one. I'll get to it soon, I'm sure.
I purposely picked a non-gory book for October for those who don't like that sort of thing, but it is still Halloween-ish.
Thanks for participating!
Angie

All are welcome, you just need an interest in reading and/or watching a film in your spare time.
I haven't started this book yet, nor have I seen the movie, but with all the space exploration on TV lately, I think it will be great!
Talk to you all soon,
Angie
