I have come to accept that some time travel books simply use some literary strategy to create a stranger in a strange land scenario. For example, in this novel how do you move the plot to have an FBI agent solve murders in Regency England. Of course, a wormhole in a stairwell. There isn't much difference with the Outlander series - simply have a woman touch a mystical stone to transport her to the 18th century to galavant with a Scottish nobleman. I just had to accept the premise that two difficult time had to interact and how this happens doesn't have to be technologically feasible. Once I accepted that the technology was not important, I sat back and enjoyed the ride.
I don't worry so much about the technology, I wasn't crazy about the modern story line of her going rogue and the her parents and the whole genetics thing, but I'm willing to overlook it.As I am many other aspects of this story. I just had fun reading it and that is what is important when you get down to it.
I just finished this book and have written my review which I'm about to post here. I'm with you on the beginning of the story. A bit stretched out - could have used some editing to tighten it up in my opinion.

Could it be a surprise that she comes upon a serial killer there? It is entertaining to watch her at work in unlikely circumstances.
I didn't entirely like the setup to her travel back to the Regency Era, but once there, I found it quite fun. This is not highbrow literary fiction but I found it immensely enjoyable and will read another of the series.
