Shikoku Pilgrimage

6. Kochi Prefecure

In Kochi, the wilderness that the monk would have experienced over 1200 years ago seems almost unchanged. The dramatic Cape Muroto area is closely linked with Kukai, as he is said to have trained in the Mikurodo Cave near the cape. The temples of this prefecture are spread over 10 locations. Curiously, after visiting the Tosa Kokubin-ji temple in Nankoku, the route will have you visit two temples in Kochi City and then
have you return to the previous location to visit Zenjibu-ji, after which you will then return to Kochi City before moving to the next location. This may seem not very logical, but remember that in this pilgrimage you must follow a precise order in the visits!
✱ Read a book where the MC acts illogically (your interpretation; briefly share details) OR
✱ Read a book with the numbers 1 AND 0 in the total page count (share page count) OR
✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in KOCHI (ignoring A, An or The).
7. Third Stage: Bodai

The third spiritual stage Bodai (enlightenment) covers temples 40 to 65, in the prefecture of Ehime. The first of these temples, Kanjizai-ji, houses one of the Seven Fortune Deities who are revered for help in daily life and for worldly benefits: Benzaiten, the goddess of beauty and the arts. In this temple there are also the statues of the twelve zodiac signs. Visitors usually pour water on the statue that represents their sign for luck.
✱ Read the third book in a series (share series name) OR
✱ Read a book in which astrology is mentioned (share the text) OR
✱ Read a book whose MC's first name begins with a letter in BODAI.
8. Ehime Prefecture

The temples of this stage are preserved in 8 different locations, although the vast majority of them are concentrated in three cities: Matsuyama (the capital of the prefecture), Imabari and Saijo. We take advantage of this stage to remember how all
the temples of this pilgrimage were founded before the year 1000, usually between the 8th and 9th centuries. All the temples were sooner or later destroyed, usually by fire, during one of the numerous wars that shook the Feudal Japan. What you see today are reconstructions, often dating from the 18th century.
✱ Read a book where fire plays a fundamental role in at least one scene (tell us briefly how) OR
✱ Read a book set before the 18th century OR
✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in EHIME (ignoring A, An or The).
9. Fourth Stage: Nehan

The last spiritual stage is Nehan (nirvana) and it mostly takes place in Kagawa prefecture, covering temples 66 to 88. Temple 66, Unpen-ji, is actually located in Tokushima prefecture, on top of the mountain of the same name. The name means "Temple of the Surrounding Clouds" and it is the highest of all the temples. While walking pilgrims dreaded the climb for centuries, modern henro can ride a cable car to the top. There are 500 marvelous Rakan statues here. It is said that everyone has a lookalike among the 500 – see if you can find yours.
✱ Read the fourth book in a series (tell us the series name) OR
✱ Read a book with a statue on the cover (post the cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose MC's first name begins with a letter in NEHAN.
10. Kagawa Prefecture

The temples of this last stage are located in 10 locations and here too, as in the second stage, you travel to one of them and then return to the previous location and then continue the journey from there. The last three temples are located in the city of Sanuki and the last one is Okubo-ji, where pilgrims usually leave their kongo-zue or walking stick as proof of having completed the circuit. We are now at the end of our journey, but let's remember the various temples are considered Japanese historical monuments and our effort has therefore rewarded us by expanding our cultural background.
✱ Read a book where the MC completes a task they have set for them self (briefly share details ) OR
✱ Read a book with a circular object on the cover (post the cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in KAGAWA.

Four Months from Start
Patrizia has a fascinating Japanese pilgrimage for us to experience.
Shikoku is the smallest of the four major islands that make up Japan. Its name means "four countries" referring to the different localities into which the island has been divided since ancient times, which have now become prefectures. Shikoku has a distinctive landscape of forests with pockets of farm communities. Rugged mountains running east and west divide the island, with the southern part facing the Pacific Ocean.
The island is known for a pilgrimage that is inspired by the life of the Buddhist monk Kukai, who lived between the 8th and 9th centuries. Each year, about 150,000 pilgrims from Japan and around the world embark on this spiritual journey to experience the rich cultures of Shikoku and reflect on the meaning of life.
✱ In ancient times the pilgrimage, about 1200 km (745 miles) long, was covered on foot, but today almost all those who travel it prefer to use modern means of transport.
✱ The pilgrimage route visits 88 temples that are numbered in a predefined order, but being the route is circular, the starting point can vary.
✱ Along the way there are also 200 bangai, which are other temples not actually considered part of the pilgrimage.
Complete 10 tasks (one from each section). To make the challenge a little harder you can choose to do the tasks in order.
Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. Please post cover if it is task appropriate. When you have completed the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and repost in a new message, letting us know it is completed.

1. Henro
Henro is the Japanese word for pilgrimage. The typical pilgrim is dressed in white with a cone-shaped straw hat, uses a cane or walking stick, and carries cards that include personal details and the reason for making the pilgrimage. These cards are left in special containers in the various temples and given to people along the way who will offer gifts to the pilgrim. The color of the card is different depending on how many times the pilgrimage has been made. A stole is worn if the pilgrimage is being carried out for religious reasons. As mentioned above, the pilgrimage visits 88 temples and takes from 40 to 60 days to complete on foot. Keep in mind that the route is only signposted by following it clockwise.
✱ Read a book with a predominantly white cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book with a double 8 (intact) in the total page count or in the year of publication (share page number or year) OR
✱ Read a book whose MC's first name begins with a letter in HENRO.
2. Koya-San
Many pilgrims begin and end this journey by visiting Mount Koya, which is actually located on the island of Honshu. Its importance is due to the fact that the Shingon Buddhist school, founded by the monk Kukai, is located here. The nearby Okunoin Cemetery of 20,000 Monks includes the tomb of the founding monk. There is a 24 km (15 miles) trail that takes you to the school at the top of the mountain, but many prefer to use the train. The original monastery has become a real city, home to a university dedicated to religious studies and dotted with over one hundred temples.
✱ Read a book with a character who is a student or teacher (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book tagged RELIGION on its GR Homepage OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in KOYA-SAN .
3. First stage: Hosshin
Making the pilgrimage means crossing all four prefectures that make up the island. This has been interpreted as a progression of the pilgrim through four "spiritual stages". The first of these stages is called Hosshin (awakening) and covers the first 23 temples, which are located in Tokushima Prefecture. Many pilgrims actually begin their journey with what is considered to be the first temple in the official route numbering, namely that of Ryozen-ji in Naruto.
✱ Read the first book in a series (share series name) OR
✱ Read a book set on an island (tell us where) OR
✱ Read a book whose MC's first name begins with a letter in HOSSHIN.
4. Tokushima Prefecture
The 23 temples in Tokushima Prefecture are located in 11 different locations. While
some locations have only one temple, many host at least a couple temples, thus making the pilgrimage easier. The highest number of temples are found in the prefecture's capital of the same name. Among others, there is the temple of Kannon-ji built by Emperor Shomu (who lived in the 7th century), making it an "imperial" pilgrimage site. As you can see from the photograph, almost all temples are surrounded by nature and are accessed by climbing a staircase to reach the entrance.
✱ Read a book a book where an emperor or a ruler is mentioned (share text) OR
✱ Read a book with a staircase on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in TOKUSHIMA.
5. Second Stage: Shugyo
The second "spiritual stage" Shugyo (austerity and discipline), takes place in the prefecture of Kochi and covers temples from 24 to 39. The first three temples are located in Muroto, a coastal city that was only founded in 1951. Pay particular attention to the Chikurin-ji temple in Kochi as it preserves some important sculptures and its gardens, dating back to the Edo period (a very important time in Japanese history which is placed between 1603 and 1867), is now a Natural Monument.
✱ Read the second book in a series (share series name) OR
✱ Read a book with a garden on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose MC's first name begins with a letter in SHUGYO.
