If it’s a big sweeping epic tale, then typically yes. If the story follows a small group of people, I can start an incomplete series.
I prefer to start an already finished series. But if I know that it will finish relatively quickly or if you miss one or two you're okay and not too lost, then I don't mind starting an unfinished series. Of course, I have found myself starting a series not realizing it was a series, and fell hard for it (Yes, looking at you Adventure Zone) and OH THE PAIN of waiting a year between editions!
For me, it's a size of the series thing. If it's 3 books, I love to be able to binge 3 books one after the other. If it's 15+ (looking at you Nalini Singh), I get too overwhelmed to start and need to read those as they come out.
I think for me it has a lot to do with what genre the series is in... for mysteries I don't mind reading ones that are in progress but I've learned that I prefer to be able to burn through romance series relatively quickly so that sometimes means waiting for at least a few to be published before starting.
