Personally, I didn't like Nikki Gillette at all. It seemed like something the person I had in my head would do. She didn't want the police to break the case before she did. I guess it was a way to create a partnership, but I didn't buy it.
I didn't mind Nikki. She did seem to have some family issues and although she wanted everyone to think she was a tough reporter she did have some vulnerability on the inside. She wanted to be her Dad's favourite child instead of her deceased brother and I think she had guilt about that. I don't think the chemistry between Reed and Nikki was expanded on enough before they got together. It wasn't even an enemies to lovers trope, he found her slightly irritating and she had a vague feeling that he was avoiding her.
I didn't like her at first because of her questionable journalistic integrity from the last book, but she grew on me as the story progressed. She seemed to mature and really comprehend the consequences of her overly ambitious attitude. I agree with Lisa that Nikki and Reed's chemistry was underdeveloped. It was there but took a back seat to the mystery. I was OK with that though.
It was smart of the author to have Nikki’s point of view be the main narrative for the story because I didn’t have a good opinion of her from the last book. She grew on me and once her family was introduced, I liked her even more given their indifference.
I didn’t like that the author had her make a really stupid decision in not reporting the breaking. She knew it was the Grave Robber and this was dangerous. Nikki was much smarter than that and it just didn’t ring true. It was a bad moment for me.
