When You’re Not Reading a Cozy
I finished Pretty Girls Dancing
by Kylie Brant. This one had a great concept but the flow and lack of depth in most of the characters kept this one to 3.5 stars rounded to 3 stars. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
My review for
The Garden of Hopes and Dreams by Barbara Hannayhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I finished She Has a Broken Thing Where Her Heart Should Be
by J.D. Barker. This is a supernatural suspense with some romance and coming of age novel. Others have classified it as horror suspense. It's compelling and original. My 4 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Currently making my way through a book of essays on Black Feminist thought. Words of Fire: An Anthology of African-American Feminist Thought
I finished Rogue Wolf
by Paige Tyler. She brings murder, romance, action, and suspense to the twelfth book in the SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team paranormal romantic suspense series. My 4 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Started Murder on the Mind by L.L. Bartlett this evening. Definitely not cozy, but holding my attention so far — even with the distraction of the Olympics. I have that on low in the background.
Thanks, Brenda! Not much reading the last half hour/forty minutes. Basketball game got exciting during the last quarter, lol.
Lol!! We have more worries here with the Delta variant going right through our communities - 3 of our states are in lockdown and yet people still travel from one hotspot to another, spreading it all the while! Our area has only been in lockdown since Thursday 5pm but already there are 13 cases with more we know of which will be in tomorrow's numbers. It's really scary this one!

I'm a hermit anyway, so I'll just keep reading! 📚 and drinking 🥂 of course. 😊
If Covid isn't scaring you, try this. The Story of Climate Change: A first book about how we can help save our planet by Catherine Barr is just what it says. Attractive and surprisingly informative for a children's book. Goes right back to before the dinosaurs. Cute cartoonish drawings.
4.5~5★ Link to my review of Story of Climate Change with several illustrations.
This one's for dads, or rather kids with dads. My Dad by Susan Quinn shows a cute little kid with a dad who is a happy, fulltime parent. Warm, fuzzy stuff and nicely imaginative.
4.5★ Link to my My Dad review with selected illustrations.
Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger is such a favourite of so many readers that I finally just had to read it. If you haven't yet, do! Great characters, family, mystery, tragedy - the works!
5★ Link to my review of Ordinary Grace
Brenda and Patty — At least you’re in a country that takes Covid more seriously than other countries. So tired of so-called adults politicizing a global pandemic and criticizing/outlawing mask mandates or any measures to help stop the spread of this disease. There were 613 new cases in my state yesterday, but some southern states have reported more than a thousand new cases a day. The US is averaging more than 100,000 new cases a day again. 🙄

Finished reading this afternoon while sort of watching Olympics — I had it on low again, so I could read during events I wasn’t into. All pre-corded events from last night, such as women’s water polo, equestrian team jumping, and men’s beach volleyball (yay, Norway!).
Now our local stations are all in storm mode, as there are severe thunderstorms moving through just north of me. There are a couple reports of unconfirmed tornadoes (National Weather Service will investigate). There were eleven confirmed a week ago last Thursday, about 1 am — middle of the night is scariest time for tornadoes as it’s harder to see them coming.
Anyway, this was a good suspense. Some typos, but decent writing — and she didn’t beat a motif to death, as she does in the “Book Town” cozy series she writes. I would consider reading book two in the series.

Stay safe **hugs**
I finished City of Time and Magic
by Paula Brackston. She brought a well-written and entertaining mix of historical fiction, fantasy, time travel, romance, and suspense. It is the fourth book in the Found Things series and readers will benefit from reading the series in order as there are references to events in previous books. The novel is mostly set in and around Marlborough, a market town in the English county of Wiltshire in contemporary times and 1878 London. My 5 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Started Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail
this morning. Reading this for book club, but it's kind of perfect as I am on a nonfiction kick right now.
Brenda wrote: "Thanks Heather - and to you too. Does that mean we read instead of working? :)"I wish. Unfortunately, my boss wasn't on board with that plan.

Haha! Bad luck Mark!!
I finished Hearts of Chaos
by Kira Brady. It's the third book in the Deadglass paranormal romantic suspense series. Unfortunately, I couldn't connect with the main characters and the story line didn't pull me in. However, many others enjoyed it a lot me than me so if you are interested in it, you can check out those reviews. My 2 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. Excellent writing, but thoroughly depressing. At least it checks off another Popsugar Challenge prompt (now 33/50).
Brenda wrote: "How depressing Heather!! lol A bright, uplifting one needed now for you :)"
You would think that’s the direction I would go, but no — I picked up a rom-suspense with a Gothic feel, lol.

Finished: The Lost Girls of Johnson's Bayou by Jana Deleon. Good rom-suspense. I guessed whodunnit, but not the creepy why.
Talk about a bit too atmospheric — last night about 9:30 pm I was lying on my couch reading this. Just about the time the hero and heroine are being shot at.... I heard actual gunshots. I could tell they were somewhere south of me, but not on my immediate street, where nothing moved. Did not find out until this morning it was next street over and up a block, at a house near the bike path. Luckily —thankfully — no one was hurt. People really need to learn proper conflict resolution! (Scowls)
