Karin | 9277 comments I didn't remember Simon from News of the World even though I've read that one twice, but I immediately recognized Captain Kidd when I got there. As you can see, I didn't read reviews on this one. It's by Paulette Jiles, I figured I'd read it at some point no matter what anyone else said; this is the sixth novel I've read by her.

This is another book c. civil war, but starts just as it's ending and then moves into the time just following. Simon falls in love at first sight with an Irish indentured servant, Doris (that's in the book blurb) who is not allowed to fraternize with any other men during that time. The blurb is a bit obscure--he doesn't just vow to find her again, he uses logic and information to figure out where they are headed and eventually works his way there, mostly by playing his fiddle.

Jiles is a good writer; my favourite novel by her is the first one I read, Enemy Women. If your first foray into Jiles is News of the World you should know that that is a fairly short novel by her.

I love so many things about the way Jiles writes, but I don't always love every story--this is NOT a reflection of her writing skills, but more my tastes and that I very seldom give 5 stars.
