Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) | 1171 comments I found this article about the "Devil's Foot root," from the Holmes story, if anyone is interested:

Long story short, it's not real.

I just found the same article! :)

Rosemarie | 257 comments It's too bad when the murderer gets away with it, which is the case in one of the stories,

Yes, generally that irks me, too. I have to say, though, that in this particular instant I didn't mind -- I even sort of hoped for that outcome!

Rosemarie | 257 comments There is another story where the victim is an innocent, nice person. That made me angry. It's one of the later stories in the book.

It's so much more satisfying if someone who really deserves it gets their comeuppance, isn't it? :)

I think you're referring to "Murder" by Arnold Bennet and I actually liked that story because it stuck with me. Somehow the author made it so that I didn't really want the murderer to be caught which is an uncomfortable feeling to be sure!

That's the story I thought of, too -- and it was among those I remembered most clearly even a year after first having read the anthology, before I'd started looking at it again in the context of this group read. It really does stand out!

Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) | 1171 comments I finished last night - there are several good stories in this anthology & I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'm sure that I will revisit it from time to time, and I'm glad I have it on my shelf. I never did read the Father Brown story, and I'm not sure I will.

I read the G.K. Chesterton story and now I don't even remember it so I don't think you are missing much.

(Although I will admit that I enjoy the Father Brown TV show on Britbox.)

Seconded all the way. (Well, OK, I do sort of remember the basics of the Chesterton story. But they don't much go beyond the setting and the fact that it's got three main characters!)
