The book I am searching for is a children's chapter book that would appeal to 2nd-5th graders. I read the book sometime between 1977-1979; it may have been published earlier than that. The story was about a boy who moves to an apartment in a city with his parents. He discovers a box (striped, maybe?) on a shelf in a closet. I think there is some kind of a note with the box. When the boy opens the box, a little man or boy comes out (naked, I think). The boy dresses him in his clothes and the two sneak out of the apartment (maybe through a window or a fire escape) and have adventures together. The book had a Roald Dahl feel to it, but I do not think that he was the author. I think the book cover was white, with a very 70's-looking illustration on it.

Thank you, Rainbowheart and Florence for the suggestions! I looked at the book descriptions and it is not any of them.

The Return of the Twelves?"
Definitely not the Littles or Return of the Twelves. Simon Small does not seem familiar either. All good suggestions though! 😀
Rainbow heart, I checked the list but unfortunately the book was not on there. However, I discovered another list regarding obscure vintage children’s gems and..... I found the book I was searching for!! The title is “Conrad:The Factory Made Boy” by Christine Nostlinger. I was a little fuzzy on some of the details but this is definitely the book!! Thanks for the suggestions, and I guess this can be moved to solved. 😁
Oh, awesome! So glad you found it. Conrad: The Factory-Made Boy for the link. This book has actually come up before and was even made into a movie back in the '80s.
The movie actually spells it Konrad. It's on Youtube, like almost everything these days, lol.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-J6m...
