In a narrow ill-lit alley in East New York, Brooklyn, wedged in between the sides of two dilapidated low-rent apartment complexes and backing up to a family owned jewelry store, now closed for the night, six street thugs in tattered black clothes plan their next crime spree. They haven't noticed the figures crouched on the fire escapes above them. Most have chains hanging from studded belts and piercings. Most also have colorful hair. But the most obvious thing that ties them together are the purple dragons, serpentine as in the Eastern tradition. worn either as patches on their leather jackets or as tattoos. You recognize them as members of a street gang known appropriately as the Purple Dragons "Ivan and I'll hit this dump," a lanky African-American guy with shutter shades and a purple mo-hawk says to the others in a nasally voice.
