The Thirty-Nine Steps is a well-beloved classic thriller by John Buchan, the first book in the Richard Hannay series, about a brave adventurer on the run from some conspiracy against him and his country at war. The book is in the public domain, so it should be fairly easy to find everywhere and in all formats to read.

As far as I am concerned, every adaptation is worth checking, and there were I think four British - from the Hitchcock's The 39 Steps (1935) to Kenneth More's and Robert Powell's incarnations of Hannay, to the latest BBC one, The 39 Steps (2008), with Rupert Penry-Jones. Robert Powell later did also a Hannay series for ITV in the late 80s.

For those interested in something more peculiar, you can also listen to Orson Welles radio interpretation of the book here: INDIANA UNIVERSITY BLOOMINGTON: Orson Welles on the Air, 1938-1946
