As incoming club chair, I'd love to hear what everyone wants to get from the CSE Book Club. There's clubs for all sorts of things around good reads - what do you like about CSE's group and what can we do to serve you better?

Dianne Dixon | 3 comments I'd like Zoom book club discussions. It's another way to meet other members.

Matthew | 4 comments Thanks, Emily, for leading this club!

I would like this club to suggest books that are on topic (scientific publishing) and nonfiction (ideally).

Like the idea of a Zoom book club discussion. Maybe even with the author.

Having fun and getting to know other club members is important, too. Once in-person meetings occur, could have an in-person book club gettogether.

Thanks Dianne! I'm going to try and get those rolling if possible. Shooting for early November to discuss our current pick.

Thanks Matthew! Not sure if I can do something as snazzy as getting the author to participate, but we'll see! But I agree that having fun and connecting with fellow members should be paramount. Perhaps we can get some other "just for fun" stuff going alongside business as usual

Sher (bibliophilica) For "fun" science books, I recommend all of Mary Roach's books. Recently I've really enjoyed The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister's Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine. No, it's not as gory as it sounds :) Another book that's scientists either love or hate is Lab Girl.

Really excited to join this group and chat about science and publishing :)

Mir K | 2 comments Hi Emily, the current book sounds like a great selection, but I've been having trouble finding a way to read it. The book isn't available in stores or online anywhere I've checked. The provided Amazon link didn't link to an active listing for the book either. The libraries here don't have it either, so I'm totally stumped on how to get a copy. Any help would be appreciated. I'm located in Canada. Thanks!

Hrm! That's odd. Try this one perhaps?

The author also has some links on her website, though they lead to UK-based retailers: https://www.annaploszajski.com/book

Dianne Dixon | 3 comments Miriam is correct. Amazon.ca does not carry the title. This link is for Amazon.com. I'm in Canada as well and it's not on Audible.ca either. I tried my local library and they don't carry it. I'm not sure shipping from the US/UK is worth the extra fees...sorry.

Oh sorry, I missed the bit about Canada! Apologies friends, we'll be sure to consider international availability with the next one. In the meantime, if you're interested in the general subject matter, I just discovered that the author has a podcast, which is available through a variety of platforms that I don't *think* have any country-specific restrictions: https://www.annaploszajski.com/podcast

Mir K | 2 comments Thanks, Emily. I have Audible, but only the podcast is available, but perhaps that's be enough context to attend the book club meeting. But as Dianne said, it'd be great for the next book to choose something available on a few different platforms and formats. Thanks!
