OK I'll give the answer, this might not be 100% accurate since I don't have the book with me anymore.

Cocaine used to be a 'rich persons' drug. If you weren't rich, couldn't have it. Crack cocaine made the drug available to the common person.

Stockings used to be made from silk and not available to everyone. With the invention of nylon and panty hose, every woman could afford to wear 'stockings' (pantyhose technically not stockings)
