This month I'm reading Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart, winner of the 2020 Booker Prize.

What a month! So many greats to choose from.

I believe I will read Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo. It shared the 2019 Booker with Margaret Atwood's The Testaments, which was phenomenal (and answered so many questions about the Aunts!), but which I have already read.

What do you think of Girl, Woman, Other so far? I read some of the reviews and it looks like I might find it fascinating or confusing.

I ended up listening to the audio book rather than picking up a physical copy. I'm glad I did because it was easy to get lost in the narrator's accent and feel like I was in Scotland. This book pulled me in early and I often found myself trying to find 10 minutes throughout the day to listen to the story. This doesn't happen with all audio books I pick up. Reading some of the comments afterwards, some readers had trouble reading the heavily accented book, which I didn't experience with the audio version.

I see it's billed as a coming of age book. I suppose it could be in that category, but it's not like any other coming of age book. It's depressing and dark and sometimes frightening. This might turn some people away, but I found it truthful and gritty. I think it's worth a read, if you don't mind reading some uncomfortable scenes.

I read Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. It won the Thurber Prize for American humor in 2017.

It was excellent. So many feels. So much that will stay with me

I finished listening to it yesterday and I loved it. Yes, it could be confusing here and there, but that's because of the dazzling range of characters whose lives all turn out to be interconnected in this beautiful tapestry of humanity.

More fascinating than confusing. Highly recommended!

An absolutely outstanding book! A must-read for everyone IMHO.

October was another Christian fiction read. This one won the Christie Award General Fiction 2019: No One Ever Asked and was about racism.
