We're finishing off this year with Vampires, Hearts, & Other Dead Things by Margie Fuston.

This debut novel follows a teenaged girl whose father is terminally ill, a trip to New Orleans, a vampire, and a celebration of life. This standalone novel has already gained some traction and is rather anticipated by light urban fantasy readers.

What are your thoughts on this novel? Do you like reading standalones? What about debut novels?

Christine | 142 comments Oops, I forgot to post my first impressions before reading this book. Fantasy is not my go-to genre, but I find myself more willing to read urban fantasy than some of the other fantasy sub-genres. I generally prefer reading standalone books to series. I do not have a preference, or often even notice, whether I am reading a book by a debut novelist.
