Yes, I believe Annamae planned for those pearls to be Daisy's ticket out, if she needed it. It was probably very hard for Daisy to pawn them, but she knew that this is why Annamae gave then to her - they were her safety net.
That was exactly what I thought Annamae meant the moment she gave the pearls to Daisy. I knew something was going to happen that would require Daisy to sell the pearls. Annamae was one of the few people who were kind to Daisy, I'm sure it broke her heart.
My first thought was her mom was going to steal them. I’m surprised she waited as long as she did to pawn them off actually.
I also thought her mother would steal them!
I believed that Annamae wanted her to have something precious and uniquely hers. She rightly assumed that Daisy would never own anything of value and she wanted her to have a fine keepsake. As cavalier as Daisy sounded about pawning it to leave town, I know it was an emotional and painful decision. Marcus knew it, too, which was why he needed to find them.

I was also worried her mother would steal them. I agree with Anita and Sharon. Annamae gave Daisy the pearls because she knew she would need them to get away from her mother.
I failed to mention that a very, very Southern belief is that every woman should own a set of pearls. That’s what drove my opinion. This non Southern girl was made to buy them by the Southerners in her life. It’s ironic though…I lost my favorite strand while walking the dog. Do not ask.

My first "real" piece of jewelry was a strand of pearls from my mother when I was 13. It was her welcome to your teens gift.

This was during that period of my life when I was trying to conform. I wore those pearls everyday, thinking I should, and to lose them while walking the dog was poetic in a sense. I never replaced them and eventually went back to being me.
