This one that came up in a search has one edition with the cover that you describe and it was published in 2011:Dark Inside by Jeyn Roberts
It's a trilogy so that is probably why the ending was vague!
Dark Inside (book 1) by Jeyn Roberts - Mai's suggestion - sounds like your book.Google Books preview:

Quotes from the book:
- "The bus staggered forward. The road beneath them began to break apart; pieces of concrete vibrated and scattered as if alive. A fire hydrant burst..."
- "I knew they would find me. I'm glowing in the moonlight. My darkness was too bright to hide forever."
- "There was too much darkness inside his brain."
- "The last thing he was before the darkness took him was Twiggy leaning over him, a crooked smile showing yellow teeth."

There was one scene where there was an earthquake while one of the main characters was on a bus. The apocalypse also involved people turning to darkness or something like that.
The cover of the book jacket was tannish, it had cracked earth in the bottom third, a city viewed in the distance, and two black eyes at the top
SPOILERS
I believe that throughout the book it would switch to the point of view of either the darkness or someone who had turned to the darkness. The ending was a bit vague, I think it was revealed that one of the main characters had the darkness or something and they had been narrating those parts of the story. I also think the ending was on a beach somewhere, but I could be wrong about that.
