Barbs B Hi, first time using this forum.

My daughter is 12 years old and recently read Stephen Chbosky’s Imaginary Friend. It was in the ‘Young people’ section at the library.
She read it and LOVED it.
I read it and loved it, but also realised it was totally inappropriate for her age.
But she loved it so much, she wants to read similar books.
Is there anything similar, but with less adult content?
She also really wants to read Stephen King’s books, I’ve never read any but I’m sure they’re not appropriate?

Please advise on what she can read, but that isn’t too ‘childish’ as she doesn’t want anything like that.

Amy There is a lot of fantastic children's horror that can actually be quite spooky! I would recommend Small Spaces by Katherine Arden, and The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier as standout horror that can be enjoyed by young and older, though was intentionally written for the under 10-15 audience. I also enjoyed Bone Jack by Sara Crowe.

While not exactly a horror, it's laced with spooky elements, and is in the end about a demonic possession, yet so chock full of good humour that it's not going to terrify irretrievably: The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding.

Starting with these novels, your kid will gain exposure to the horror genre top literature with some excellent autumnal timing, and content that doesn't accidentally push her out of childhood before is necessary.

Amy Sorry, not "for the under 10-15 audience," that's a typo. Those novels are written exactly for the 10-15 audience.

I think with Stephen King, well, I'd want to be quite careful. Definitely considered frightening and adult. I'd also personally want to talk about sexism in literature if children are starting to gain access to adult content.

Amy I went through my Read list and it seems I also really enjoyed The Companion by Katie Alender and Hoodoo by Ronald L. Smith! Okay, that's all from me 😄😄😄, sorry --- I can't resist a good book suggestion.
