Peeta is the worst! He's wimpy, useless, can't hunt so ultimately can't survive without Katniss. He can only charm people, and while that may work in the capitol, it wouldn't work while hunting or with people from the districts

I mean, I love Peeta and am definitely Team Peeta/Everlark, but I am curious about why you think he's wimpy. Do you have any examples? Like, is it just because he's a sensitive-ish guy or?? Cause I genuinely can't think of a situation where he was wimpy or anything of the like.

I get the part about not being able to hunt, but then again, why would he know how to hunt? He's a baker's son. His mom was abusive to him, whilst Katniss learned how to hunt from her father. Peeta never had the means, family, or reason to hunt, despite his difficult family life. Compared to Katniss, he would've been considered one of the 'richer' District 12 kids, and even then it wasn't by much.

How would he even have learned to hunt? There wasn't exactly enough time--or safety--inside the arena for Katniss to even teach him, and his family didn't seem to know anything about it. Honestly, if Peeta had known how to hunt it would've felt unrealistic to me. Hunting is illegal in District 12 as are weapons, and both tributes from District 12 know how to hunt despite most people in 12 not knowing how? That's too convenient and coincidental to make any logical sense to me.

It's already made clear that District 12 kids aren't supplied with Hunger Games training, so Katniss doing so well in the games was technically an anomaly, which is stated numerous times. Technically, weapons and hunting aren't allowed in District 12, but Katniss and her father did it anyway in order to provide food for their family. Katniss is also more rebellious than Peeta is.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Exactly, Peeta can't hunt so he would never have won the games if he hadn't heavily relied on Katniss. Katniss doesn't need someone who will way her down (hem-hem, Peeta Mellark). She needs someone who will make her stronger (hem-hem, Gale Hawthorne).

The reason I think Peeta is wimpy, is he isn't a rule breaker, Which means ultimately he wouldn't survive, he can't hunt, sure his parents keep him busy and stuff but if he wants to survive in the real world without his parents, he should learn to hunt.

In my opinion Gale and Katniss would be like a firecracker waiting to explode. They're good on their own, but Gale is also very jealous. He and Katniss are too similar in personality to me.

I mean, sure, but he's also probably also afraid to break the rules in some way, perhaps due to fearing punishment or something, as Peeta wasn't explored much in some ways. We don't know some of his personality.

And I know that the Prim thing isn't fully Gale's fault, but that might've led to some of Katniss's decision to be with Peeta

Agreed. I don't think Peeta is "wimpy" per say, he's just caring. In the books it said during the evacuation of 12 there was what....10,000 people? Everyone seemed very malnourished, and the group of kids there for Reaping was pretty large. Peeta's Family's whole business was food, so out of kids his age he was one of the better fed. I can't imagine his name being in there too many times. The chances of him being chosen (over say Gale who did have his name in there a lot) I would imagine is similar to Prim's name. Plus over the coarse of the series, his character development is significantly stronger than Gale's which translates into Katniss growing closer to him. You can see Katniss in Mockingjay being so tired of all the fighting, whereas Gale is still full of the fight. After being in 2 hunger games and the head of the rebellion, before even turning 18, she wants someone who can understand what she went through and Peeta was beside her the whole time.

True. Gale could never fully understand what Katniss went through as he was never reaped despite the odds being very against him. I doubt Peeta had tesserae, nor would he have had any reason to take any. Based on appearances, it was stated that Katniss was thinner and more malnourished than Peeta. Peeta was said to have a stocky build for District 12 kids. Sure, he was a smaller male than the rest of the tributes, but as far as District 12 kids goes, he was supposed to be one of the healthier ones, so he'd have no reason to do what Katniss did.

Not sure who Uriah is (I've never read Divergent; it's on my TBR), but I agree wholeheartedly on the other two. I don't know. Authors just want to make us sad

It's funny because I'm an aspiring author myself, and I've killed off characters that would likely make future readers cry lol You'd be surprised how easy it is (not for the author emotionally, but for the purpose of plot and character arcs) Writing school? What writing school XD

Aren't all writers psychopaths and sadists when it comes to their characters? I just thought that came with the territory XD That's nonexistent for me right now lol However I am going to minor in Creative Writing when I go to college in Fall 2023.

I've tried writing a book before too. I started my first novel in 2017 when I was 14. Didn't finish it. Was also written poorly. The characters were good though. I've started a lot of writing projects. I have 50+ WIPs saved on my computer and Google Drive lol XD (picture books, chapter books, novels, short stories, etc.)
