It seems obvious that she was doing it deliberately, and after a while I realized that "he" was always whichever main character was being discussed at the time, but I still often got confused momentarily about who "he" was at any given time.

Agreed, for some time I thought Harold was talking to me and not to William when Harold started using 'you'.

Even the narrator's passive voice constantly used "he."

Ci mettevo un po' per capire a chi si riferisse ma alla fine è sempre stato molto comprensibile.

Yup. Had to reread to figure it out. I wonder why she wrote it that way.
