Mrs. Wortle - His wife

Miss. Mary Wortle - Dr. Wortle's daughter

Mr. Peacock: Assistant schoolmaster to Dr. Wortle.

Mrs. Peackock: His wife (there is a legal question here)

Mrs. Stanisloup: Wife of a merchant who holds a grudge against Dr. Wortle over a payment lawsuit.

Mr. Puddicombe: Vicar of the neighbouring parish.

Mr. Peason: The Squire.

Robert Lefroy: Brother of Mrs. Peacock's former husband.

Ferdinand Lefroy: First husband of Mrs. Peacock

Lord Carstairs: A young lord studying in the school, who is in love with Mary Wortle.

Lady Margaret Momson: Wife of the Rector of Buttercup, first cousin to Mrs. Stanisloup

Rev. Momson: Rector of Buttercup.

Mr. Momson: Squire of Buttercup.

Mrs. Momson: Wife of the Squire.

The Bishop and Mrs. Rolland, wife of the Bishop.

Lady Anne Clifford: Mother of two boys of Dr. Wortle's school.

Mr. Talbot: Freind of Dr. Wortle and whose son attends Dr. Wortle's School.

Lord and Lady Bracy: Parents of Lord Carstairs.
