I guess we look at it as weird with our modern eyes, but you need to keep in mind that these novels are more than 200 years old. Societal customs weren't the same then. (view spoiler)[Marriages within the same family were pretty common to ensure that the family wealth stays inside the family. It was common among kings and queens too. Direct blood sibling marriage was prohibited, but marriage between first cousins was common. At the same time, a marriage with a deceased wife’s sister or a deceased husband’s brother was not allowed. So John Knightley couldn't have legally married Emma for instance, if he were widowed.
