Hi everyone,

It has come to my attention that Goodreads has changed everyone’s privacy setting so that you’ll only receive private messages from friends. If you would like to change this to allow anyone to send you a private message, you will need to edit your profile.

Click on your profile picture and in the menu that opens click "Account Settings"
Under the "settings" tab scroll down to "Who Can Send Me Private Messages" and change it back to "anyone".

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Thanks for the alert! I’m amazed I actually got your message—Goodreads has stopped sending me most e-mails.

This is a known bug. You can contact Goodreads support using the "Help" link at the bottom of every GR page. They may be able to reset them for you.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Thanks, but I have contacted them repeatedly, starting at the beginning of the year when they stopped sending my daily digest, and all they say is, “As we told you last time, we’re aware of the problem and are working on it.”

That's very irritating. I wish they would spend more time fixing existing problems rather than making changes no one wants.

Helen (helenfrominyocounty) | 235 comments Thanks for the heads-up -- I changed my settings for messages. It's affecting my "silent book club" settings for Zoom meetings, so I'm glad I checked my message here!

It has come to my attention that a new member has been spamming member threads with unrelated posts. The posts have been removed and the member has been blocked from rejoining.

My apologies for the inconvenience.

This happens in the group I moderate as well, although not to that extent. I'm not happy about it, but not enough of an issue to employ a screening requirement of approvibg applications over it though.

Exactly. The pre-screening and approval of applications are time-consuming and also demotivating for people who want to join. The occasional spammer does not warrant making this a closed group.

Lauren; Thanks although no need to apologize! It's unfortunate that with the ease of technology it has become such a problem.

Helen (helenfrominyocounty) | 235 comments Yeah, I reported her as soon as they showed up. Glad they were removed.

Thanks Peggy, Sandy and Helen.
Hopefully, we won't have a repeat.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 19 comments A question: is there a place in this group where authors can safely talk about their historical mystery works?

I'm in the last stages of finishing my first historical espionage novel after publishing seven contemporary spy or crime thrillers. The other GR groups I belong to usually have at least one discussion authors can use to promote books that might appeal to the other members. The groups usually restrict self-promo to the designated discussion(s).

I don't have enough time to spam anyone. If anything, I under-post. But I'd like to invite members to look at my website, Insta feed, or YouTube channel, and join my mailing list if they like what they see. When the book finally releases, I'd like to let the members know. I'm sure I'm not the only author in this genre who would like to expose his/her work to the largest historical mystery group on GR.

If there's already a place for this in the group, please let me know where it is. If not, should there be a discussion about creating one?

Any discussions related to your own books are considered self-promotion. Feel free to open a thread in the self-promotion folder and direct members to your website, Insta feed, YouTube channel, or mailing list.

The folder is HERE
