Update to Spell-it-Out Rules
Following feedback we have amended the rules on using non-fiction books in spell-outs. In the past there was confusion over which non-fic books could be used for character names.

For this wheel, NO non-fiction book can be used for character names.

You can still use author / title / audio narrator* / translator* for letters (*if applicable)

The updated rules are below, and embedded in the rules posts for the game.

How a "spell it out" works
Find the letters needed using the first letter in:
◈ book / series title*
◈ author first/last name
◈ FICTION ONLY: character name**
◈ If listening to the audio book: audio narrator first/last name
◈ If you are reading a translation: translator first/last name

* if the first word in the title/series is a definite or indefinite article you can ignore them if you prefer
** characters must be significant to the plot. you can use first, last or nickname.

Note that non-fiction books don't have characters

Aiswrya | 1213 comments Round 5: 4 Dec - 18 Dec
Word: Exercise Wheezily
Tags: run, sweat, gasp, exercise
Color: Orange
Color Task: cover colour (>50%), text that colour on cover, item that colour on cover, colour word in text, and colour word in title. Books can only be used for ONE colour task

Welcome to the fifth and final round of the Wheel of Wheels. We hope you have enjoyed the trip down memory lane as we start the round which inspired it all. You never know where mods are lurking and when remarks made in jest become challenge fodder. When someone says "next we'll have to spell out EXTREME QUALITY PIZZA", how is a mod to resist such a dare? Thus the Extreme Wheel was born.

As with previous rounds, each book you read will get page points as per the rules; you only get credit for ONE incomplete spell-out of your word. Spell out your extreme word as many times as possible. But remember to coordinate with your teammates to be wary of over-reading.

Bonus Points

Each word has been assigned a colour. In a wobbly nod to bonuses of Wheel Past, there a 5 colour tasks. Each task can only be earned once. Books meeting one of the colour tasks (use your eyes and team judgement!) used in your spell-out can earn your team bonus points. Up to 5 colour bonuses are available during Round 5.
Each book used for the colour bonus will get 5 bonus points (to a maximum of 25 bonus points)

The tasks are: cover colour (>50%), text that colour on cover, item that colour on cover, colour word in text, and colour word in title. Books can only be used for ONE colour task.

Each word has also been assigned 4 tags. Books with a tag (at least 1, not including those of your team members) used in your spell out can earn your team bonus points. Up to 10 tag bonuses are available during Round 5. Books can only be used for one tag.
Each book used for the bonus genre will get 5 bonus points (to a maximum of 50 bonus points)

If a book meets a tag and a colour requirement then you can use it for both bonuses.

Enjoy reading to the EXTREME!

Aiswrya | 1213 comments Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get some introductions done. I’m Aiswrya (Aish is fine) I live in New York, so eastern time for me. I used to read a lot but work and real life have thrown a damper on it! Hoping to read about 2 books a month now lol! Not picky with my genres, they highly depend on my mood, but I could never go wrong with a fast paced adventure!

Looking forward to reading with all of you! Welcome aboard :)

message 12: by Grace (new)

Grace | 21 comments Hi, I'm Grace and I live in England. This is my first wheel-a-thon challenge. I'm either reading loads or hardly anything so I went for 3 books a month as a safe option!

message 13: by MN Lisa (new)

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 802 comments Hi I'm Lisa and I live in Minnesota, so Central Time zone for me. I read about a book a day, depending on the length of the book, so I signed up for 20 books a month. That gives me some room for other challenges that I do.

I've never done Wheel-a-thon before, but did a similar challenge in a different group (Spell).

I do have a job that I love, but with my daughter in England for a semester, i have more free time than I did before. Housework on the other hand I just don't do so I can escape into my books.

message 14: by Aiswrya (new)

Aiswrya | 1213 comments Hi Grace!

Hi Lisa! And that’s where know you from. I thought your name sounded familiar! I’ve done a a few challenges on the MM group :)

message 15: by Aiswrya (new)

Aiswrya | 1213 comments Our color for the first round is Baby Powder. Couple tough letters there

message 16: by MN Lisa (new)

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 802 comments I looked at my books and I could probably read 10 and have a whole word picked out. Not sure if you wanted me to do that or just list them. I have a bunch of books for W and O for this call and have even saved a few Zs

message 17: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5448 comments Hello! I'm Suzanne from Idaho (so Mountain time zone). I'm sure looking forward to getting to play with all of you! I've played wheel-a-thon before, and it's fun. I signed up for 21 a month - I do work a lot (I teach college math) but I can listen to audio books sometimes when I grade, and for sure when I commute, and reading is my escape that I can fit into little corners of time. I've definitely had years when I was lucky to read 1 book a month - life keeps changing!

Thanks so much Aish and Steph for captaining!

message 18: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Hey! I'm Stacie. This is not my first wheel, excited to play. I am also in Eastern Time, I live in MD. I signed up for 35 a month. Will see what I have for baby powder.

message 19: by Grace (new)

Grace | 21 comments I've got books on my to read list to cover all of baby powder, I only signed up for 3 books I think so happy to do whatever letter :)

message 20: by Vivi (new)

Vivi | 156 comments Hi, I'm Vivi from Portugal 🇵🇹 (Europe).
I read about 4 books per month. I'll be going on vacation at the end of the month, so I'll probably have more free/reading time then.

I'm a bit of a mood reader, but I can take at least 2 letters for this round... If you guys want to plan out which letters each teammates take?!

Or we can all just read whatever; and take letters as we finish reading books... Either way I'm okay with it.

message 21: by Aiswrya (new)

Aiswrya | 1213 comments Hello everyone!

For the benefit of the first timers, we’ll have to spell out “Baby Powder” several times. Go ahead and read whatever you feel like, post your letter in your completion posts. Steph and I will assign books to letters as we see fit. We’ll probably shuffle them around too, depending on what letters we need to complete the word. So, no pressure on anyone. If we need to read for a particular letter, we’ll be sure to let you know. Have fun everyone!

message 22: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5448 comments Thanks - that sounds like a great approach - I like it because then I can keep being a "mood reader".

I hope everyone has a great day!

message 23: by Elena (new)

Elena | 1403 comments Hello everyone! I'm Elena, another East coaster and also in Maryland. I've played wheel a few times before, it's been so much fun every time. Love the theme for this one and very excited to play!

message 27: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1149 comments Hello everyone! I'm Natasha and I'm from New Jersey so EST time for me. I signed up for 12 books a month. I'm a bit behind on my Goodreads 2021 reading challenge so I'm hoping this challenge will force me to put the phone down and actually read.

message 28: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 295 comments Hello everyone! I am Steph/Stephanie from Michigan. I am a co-captain on this fun-filled team. I read a bit of everything my goto reads are definitely in the fantasy/sci-fi realm. I look forward to this game with all of you!

message 29: by Alisha (new)

Alisha | 329 comments Hi everyone! I'm Alisha and I'm a librarian from Ohio. I'm looking forward to playing with everyone! I pledged 8 books.

message 30: by Aiswrya (new)

Aiswrya | 1213 comments Welcome everyone :) We have everyone checked in and ready to go! I've added the some info about rules in message #5. Let Steph and I know if you guys have any questions :)

I've also added a link to a planning sheet in Message #5. If you could fill that out for us as you read and complete a book, it'll be a huge help for Steph and I when we fill out the main spreadsheet.

There's also a sample completion post in #7

message 31: by MN Lisa (new)

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 802 comments Is there a place to ask questions or does someone know the following? What if a character has a name, but also a nickname. For example, the book I'm reading now his official name is Tarquin, but everyone calls him Quin. Would that qualify for both T and Q or just Q? (the Tarquin is mentioned multiple times, but Quin is used 95% of the time).

Aiswrya | 1213 comments MN Lisa wrote: "Is there a place to ask questions or does someone know the following? What if a character has a name, but also a nickname. For example, the book I'm reading now his official name is Tarquin, but ev..."

It'd qualify for both.

message 33: by Aiswrya (new)

Aiswrya | 1213 comments Pooja wrote: "In planning sheet where to write for which letter we r Reading book???"

I'll put in a sample there to clarify. But, you'll enter the book, page count, and possible spell out options.

message 34: by MN Lisa (new)

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 802 comments If we've already planned books, do you want us to add them now or wait until they have been read? You could add a column for read so that it might help find letters we need...based on what people plan to read? (PS I love spreadsheets).

message 35: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5448 comments Thanks for the information!

message 36: by Aiswrya (new)

Aiswrya | 1213 comments @Lisa - good idea. We’ll add that thank you!

message 37: by Grace (new)

Grace | 21 comments If the main character's name is the same as the title of the book can you count it for that letter twice?

message 38: by Aiswrya (new)

Aiswrya | 1213 comments Grace wrote: "If the main character's name is the same as the title of the book can you count it for that letter twice?"

Technically, you wouldn’t have to. A book can only be used once per player.

message 39: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 295 comments added date read column and highlighted the row that is our target read. If we read beyond that we take penalty points.

message 40: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 295 comments please do not insert rows just add them to the bottom and the rule check box is just for captions to check that everyone is playing fair.

message 41: by MN Lisa (new)

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 802 comments I added my planned books. If we can use the book title I should have one full spell of "Baby Powder". I also only added the letters that were in the selection and did not include letters that could not help make the word.

message 42: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5448 comments I added the three books I know I'll be reading first - sorry they don't have a variety of letters, but they all have one (or two) letters that will work - phew.

message 43: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5448 comments I volunteered to do daily questions for the Group book - here's hoping! (Love those extra points....I keep telling myself I'm not competitive, but I just might be.)

message 44: by Aiswrya (new)

Aiswrya | 1213 comments Haha awesome hope we get picked! My team had the worst luck with BOM on TT8!

Everyone set to start the challenge tomorrow?

message 45: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5448 comments Oh I was thinking the challenge starts Saturday?

Although all day yesterday I was thinking it was Thursday, so I'm not a very trustworthy time source :)

message 46: by MN Lisa (new)

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 802 comments Doesn't the challenge start on Saturday the 9th? I'm super excited to get started.

message 47: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 295 comments yep don't start reading yet!

message 48: by Aiswrya (new)

Aiswrya | 1213 comments Oops sorry! Got my dates mixed up 🤭

message 49: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1149 comments The challenge starts at 4pm ET for me tomorrow. I'll be on a short weekend getaway with a friend, but will certainly be able to start a book (TBD).

message 50: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5448 comments Oh I'm glad you asked that Pooja. I assumed that was true - wheels on a cycle counted. That is why I marked yes for Under the Whispering door (a parked scooter on the cover). So it is good to check.

Have fun on your getaway Natasha.
