Simon Snow Trilogy [September 30, 2021]

Really looking forward to this. I think rereading an old favourite will hopefully kick me out of my fantasy slump 🤞
I've been on a general uptick, lately, when I don't get sidetracked watching TV...
Been reading:
Alex Benedict in the Mystery Club:
Cork O'Connor in the Mystery Club:
Pendergast:
Hard Luck Hank:
Jacques McKeown:
Gray Man:
Skulduggery Pleasant:
And assorted other books/series... those have been the frequent ones, keeping me chugging along... alot of mysteries/thrillers...

Decided to start a little early... haven't done much reading on my days off, thought maybe it was the book I was reading...
So I started this...
First couple pages made magic sound like riding a bike, lol... until Simon explained his problem was more like Saidar in Wheel of Time... male casters trying to wrestle a river... altho he sounds like an exception to the normal rules of magic...

Chapter 5: After years of magic books like Harry Potter and The Magicians and a bunch I'm forgetting, it's funny how normal and mundane Simon & Penelope can make magic school sound... not much different than real school...
Especially considering they're in their final year, so it's like we've jumped to the end of Harry Potter... moreso if you want to compare (view spoiler)
This isn't going to be a work book... I find myself pausing and rewinding too much, because I'm missing things (partially because I started a new game save, but it'll be even worse at work)... at least reading at home will give me more opportunities to comment...

Chapter 11/12: This is as far as I can make it today... the chapters are super short... the shortest seem to be glimpses into other POVs... Lucy, Mage, and Penelope, so far...

The more the merrier... not sure how much you need to rush to get the 3rd book Saar... I think you have some time...
I got the ball rolling fast, but no idea how fast Hailee is going to read... I'm kinda just going at her pace... I'll definitely be tossing in some other books in between each Simon Snow book (not that that means I can't read a Simon Snow book a week, or something)

As often as I'm commenting, I kinda feel like I'm trying to draw too much meaning out of the book... and that I'm shouting into the wind a bit, since I'm forging ahead alone still :D
Can't seem to go 2 chapters without pausing and commenting...

Chapter 17 again: (because I'm not commenting often enough)
Bonus Content: (view spoiler)
EDIT: Maybe I should start editing to cut down on comment spam?
Chapter 17 has been a treasure trove of comment fodder... probably because I think it's the longest chapter yet... at least since before school started, anyway... (view spoiler)

Chapter 18: I just spoiled something big, trying to figure out if Lucy was (view spoiler) and I just hadn't been paying close enough attention to character names... cat is out of the bag now, even tho I immediately closed the wiki...
I loved that (view spoiler) is a finding spell :D
The author kinda reminds me of Seanan McGuire, between the popcultury rhyme magic and her bio mentioning trips to Disney World...
Based on the covers, I assume this trilogy is (view spoiler)

Start of chapter 23: I think I'll pause for a bit, and let you guys start, instead of zooming to the end alone... I have another BR I can jump to...
Seems like as good of a pause point as any (view spoiler)

I kind of imagined this as a read and comment at your own pace kind of buddy read. As long as each person leaves their comments in spoiler tags and notes what book and chapter they are currently on we'll all talk and comment on things even if we've passed them by that point. So go as fast or slow as you want.
As for my own pace. It kind of depends on my read of Dune which I'm hoping to read half of (as that is what the movie covers) by around the 20th of October but I imagine even with that I'll read the whole Simon Snow trilogy in about 2-3 weeks.

But the magic gets me, every time... especially Simon's [spoilers removed]"
Thats something I love about the magic in this series. Its has a lot of comedic elements to it, like its not taking itself too seriously

There are definitely a lot of Harry Potter comparisons in this book. The world building and the magic could be described as a Harry Potter parody.
This is the 3rd time I'm reading this book but on my previous reread I don't think I took notice of how much foreshadowing there was for future events especially in the first few chapters.

No, Iain, you're just the enthousiastic reader as we know you ;)
I'm going to read some of the comments. I'm now at chapter 16.

Well, that was fun. A bit of a break in the story. I think more could come of this breaks.
